Marauders' PSAC Tournament run stopped by Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - The top-seeded Mercyhurst Lakers exacted some revenge for its lone regular season PSAC loss by knocking the Millersville Marauders out of the PSAC Tournament by a 4-2 score on Tuesday.

Mercyhurst (7-5) advances to the PSAC Championship for the fourth consecutive yearnhaving won the last three conference titles. Millersville (6-7) was in the semifinals for the second consecutive tournament after going six years without a postseason berth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• While Millersville's No. 1 team of Carlos Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni turned in its usual stellar performance in a 6-3 win over David Akinpetide and Milan Jankovic, Mercyhurst scored 6-0 and 6-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for the match's first point. In the Millersville's 5-2 win over Mercyhurst on April 9, the Marauders won the doubles point via wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
• Mercyhurst needed three wins in singles to advance, and while Millersville won four singles matches in the seaosn's first meeting, Mercyhurst turned the tables and took three of the five matches contested. At No. 2 singles, Yanni took the first set 6-2 from Akinpetide, but the Laker rallied for 6-1, 6-2 wins in the second and third sets. Milan Jankovic also reversed the regular season result at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Santiago Ramos. The Lakers clinched the win with a victory at No. 5 singles.
• The Marauders received a 6-0, 6-2 win from Ben Fellman at No. 4 singles, and a 6-1, 6-4 win from Ting-Yu Yen in the No. 6 spot. The rematch between arguably the top two singles players in the PSAC--Millersville's Martinez-Lucas and Mercyhurst's Unai Amilleta Gonzalez--was not contested.

POSTMATCH REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
On today's match: "Hats off to Mercyhurst. There's a reason why they're the three-time defending champion, and they showed it today. We threw the kitchen sink at the them, and they were just a little bit better at the end. We have no regrets. We played really well."
On what the team accomplished this season: "Couldn't have asked for a better season. We're peaking at the right time. So thankful we were able to play this season. These guys have sacrificed so much so I'm grateful they were able to get out on the court and enjoy the fruits of something they put some much work into."
