SEMIFINAL PREVIEW

  • The Millersville women's tennis team has advanced to the PSAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016 and takes on the PSAC East's top seed West Chester Wednesday. But the Marauders are hardly full-strength. Millersville lost a starter prior to Friday's quarterfinal against Bloomsburg but still managed to prevail, 4-3.
  • For the Marauders to have reached the PSAC Semifinals in 2021 is nothing short of remarkable. The Marauders played the entire without Esperanza Contador and Hannah Bryan, who were the team's No. 1 and No. 3 last season. The Marauders will also be without freshman Noelle Htwar Wednesday. Htwar went 6-4 as the Marauders No. 3 this season.
  • The Marauders rank third all-time among PSAC schools with five conference championships. Millersville won all five of its titles between 1997 and 2002. Only the last two have come in the current team bracket format.
  • Millersville went 4-1 in PSAC East action, and that lone loss came by a 5-2 score at West Chester. West Chester won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and the first three singles flights. Three of those singles matches, however, were decided in three sets.
  • Millersville's singles went 22-8 against PSAC East opponents. The team was effective in spots No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, going a combined 22-6 overall.
  • Kelsey Heckert owns the team's best singles winning percentage, posting an 8-1 record with a 6-0 mark at No. 5 singles. She has won six consecutive matches. Maria Ojeda has won seven in a row, boosting her record to 7-1. She went unbeaten against the PSAC East.
  • The doubles pairing of Heckert and Jasmine Morris has won eight-straight matches.
  • West Chester went 7-3 during the regular season, going 5-0 against the PSAC East. West Chester has won all but one PSAC East title since 2015, but no PSAC East team has won a conference championship since 2006. Millersville was one of just four teams to score points against West Chester this season.

QUOTABLE

  • Millersville head coach Matt Helsel on the team's season: “In light of all that's transpired the past year, we are truly grateful to have had the opportunity to play anything. Thanks go to the PSAC and Millersville's athletic leadership and training staff for making this happen. We've made it to the PSAC Semifinals without three of our best players, which is a testament to the depth and strength of our program. I couldn't possibly be any prouder to be be a part of this team this season. It's something I'll never forget, and as good as this feels this year, I know we have bright days ahead of us as well.”
West Chester has been the team to beat in the East for some time, but we're proud to know that the gap has narrowed tremendously. I trust we'll give our best effort. It's what we've done all year.
Matt Helsel, Millersville Head Coach

SERIES HISTORY
