Marauders riding hot streak into PSAC Semifinals

TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

  • The Millersville men's tennis team seems to be peaking at just the right time. The Marauders have won four consecutive duals and five of the last seven dating back to April 9. The two losses in that stretch were a one-point loss to Edinboro and a loss to Division I Villanova. Among the wins was a 5-2 win over Mercyhurst. That stands as Mercyhurst's only PSAC loss of the season, and the Lakers are the No. 1 seed in this week's four-team PSAC Tournament.
  • Millersville enters Friday's semifinal at Mercyhurst as the No. 4 seed, going 5-5 against Division II opponents, and four of those losses came by a 4-3 score. Excluding the canceled 2020 season, Millersville is making its second-straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament after going six years without a postseason berth. Millersville has lost five consecutive PSAC Semifinal matches with its last semifinal win coming in 2007. In the tournament's current format, Millersville has reached the championship match three times but has never won the title. All-time, the Marauders have three league championships. The most recent came in 1985.
  • Carlos Martinez-Lucas has won six consecutive matches and is 10-2 as Millersville's No. 1 this season. He's dropped just five games in his last three matches.
  • Five of Millersville's six starters have winning records, and Ting-Yu Yen, who is 5-7, has gone 3-0 since moving to the No. 6 spot. Zach Pernia (8-3 overall), went 6-1 at No. 6 and moved up to No. 5 recently where he is 2-1.
  • Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni have been outstanding at No. 1 doubles and can certainly make the case of being the PSAC's top doubles team. The duo went 4-0 against PSAC competition and 10-2 overall. The lone loss in the last 10 matches was on a tiebreaker against a team from Division I Villanova.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Mercyhurst has won the last three PSAC championships (2019, 2018, 2017)
  • When Millersville beat Mercyhurst 5-2 on April 9, it was Mercyhurst's first PSAC loss since 2016.
  • Mercyhurst is coming off of a 4-3 win over Edinboro that decided the regular season conference title.
  • Unai Amilleta Gonzalez has been unbeatable in the No. 1 spot. He's 11-0 on the season, including 7-0 at No. 1. No player has even pushed him to three sets. He's won 61 singles matches in his four-year career.
  • Mercyhurst went 27-9 in PSAC singles matches. Kiran Richards has solidified the team's No. 6 spot, going 3-0 in PSAC matches. He was not in the lineup when Millersville beat Mercyhurst in the regular season. Milan Jankovic went 5-1 against PSAC opponents at No. 3 singles. That one loss came at the hands of Millersville's Santiago Ramos.
We were fortunate to get past Mercyhurst a couple weeks ago, but now we have to do it again. Playing a perennially strong team on their home turf in the playoffs is a tough assignment, but we're excited for the challenge.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This is the second PSAC Tournament meeting between Millersville Mercyhurst. The only other came in the third-place match in 2011, which Millersville won by a 5-4 score.
  • In the match-up on April 9, Millersville won two of three doubles matches. Martinez-Lucas and Yanni won, 6-3, and Ramos and Pernia won, 6-2. Fellman and Ting-Yu Yen lost a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). In singles, Millersville received three-set wins from Yanni and Ramos, and Pernia won at No. 6 singles in straight sets. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets, and three sets needed tiebreakers.
  • Mercyhurst's Gonzalez gave Martinez-Lucas his only PSAC loss of the season by a 6-3, 6-2 score. That was the first career meeting between the two No. 1's.
  • Mercyhurst holds an 18-8 edge in the all-time series which dates back to 1983. Mercyhurst won seven in a row between 2013 and 2019. Millersville won three in a row from 2011-2012.

We're very thankful to have been able to play this season at all, so we're literally just happy to be here and be playing. If we can play well, that's just icing on the cake. Nothing that happens on Tuesday will change how special this team is. I'm thrilled to be along for the ride.
