Men's tennis ready to make last-season run

4/15/2021 3:11:00 PM

WEEKEND PREVIEW

  • The Millersville men's tennis team enters the final two weeks of the season set to make a push toward the PSAC Tournament. The Marauders have a 2-6 overall record and are 2-2 in PSAC play but have played in challenging schedule that includes a loss to Division I Villanova and four losses to teams ranked in the top five of the Oracle/ITA Atlantic Regional rankings. The Marauders are well-positioned for a spot in the PSAC Tournament with two conference duals left on the schedule. The last two duals are against the bottom two teams in the standings (West Chester and Shepherd).
  • West Chester is up first on Saturday, April 17, but not before a non-conference dual against Daemen on Friday. Millersville also plays Frostburg State on Sunday, giving the Marauders three matches in three days.
  • Four of the Marauders' six losses have come by a 4-3 score, and the two that haven't were against Villanova and Fairmont State (5-2), which is ranked No. 3 in the region.
  • Millersville's singles players are 13-5 in PSAC play and 6-3 in doubles. Overall, doubles has been a strength of the team as it has gone 13-11 in doubles in its eight duals. Carlos Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni are 6-2 playing together and undefeated against the PSAC.
  • Martinez-Lucas has won six of his last seven singles matches in the No. 1 flight, including a 6-2, 6-3 win over Villanova's Alex Kim his last time out.

SENIOR SALUTE

  • The Marauders will recognize its three seniors--Brandon Miller, Matt Hidalgo and Ben Fellman--prior to Sunday's dual with Frostburg State. Miller saw his first action of the season against Villanova, playing at No. 3 doubles. He's played 12 singles matches in his four-year career with the Marauders. Hidalgo played in his first singles match of the season against Villanova and previously played three singles and six doubles matches as a freshman in 2017-18. Fellman is a four-year starter playing primarily in the No. 4 flight this season. He went 7-1 in 2019-20. An outstanding student, he's a two-time PSAC Champion, a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and is the Scholar-Athlete Award recipient at the 2021 Millersville Dining with Champions event.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Daemen also has three matches in three days this weekend. The team has just three matches played (1-2) and has played Queens twice. West Chester is 1-5 with three consecutive 7-0 losses. It's lone win came against Shepherd. Frostburg State is 1-5 while playing a tough schedule that features losses to regionally-ranked Charleston, West Liberty and Salem.
Our non-conference schedule acts like a pencil sharpener, and at this point in the year, we've got a pretty fine point. We have already seen this pay dividends, and I only expect it to pay off more during these last two weeks.
Matt Helsel, Millersville Head Coach

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville is 30-23 all-time against West Chester, 2-3 against Daemen and 1-0 against Frostburg State. Millersville stopped West Chester's six-match winning streak in 2018 and has won the last two match-ups including the 2019 meeting by a 7-0 score. All five duals between Millersville and Daemen have come since 2006, and while Millersville went winless in the three duals played at McComsey Courts, it has won each of the last two duals by 7-0 and 6-1 scores. The one and only meeting with Frostburg State came in 2019 and resulted in a 7-0 win for the Marauders.
