Millersville

Softball vs. Kutztown

Millersville softball set for busy week

3/10/2021 2:02:00 PM

ABOUT THE GAMES

  • After opening the season with a series split against PSAC East rival Kutztown, Millersville embarks on a jam-packed week that includes six games against non-conference opponents. Millersville hosts Chestnut Hill Thursday and travels to Bloomfield on Saturday before returning home to host Jefferson on Sunday.
  • No player in the PSAC got off to a faster start than Faith Willenbrock. The Millersville senior was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week after hitting .692 (9-for-13) with four homers in four games. Willenbrock has hit a home run in six of her last eight games dating back to last season and owns a nine-game hitting streak, which dates to 2019.
  • Willenbrock wasn't the only Marauder who hit well in the opening series. The team totaled 11 home runs. Hunter Little and Devan Masciulli both hit two. Little started her season by going 6-for-13 with six RBIs. Masciulli, who had two total home runs in her first 100 career games, drove in a team-leading seven runs. One of her home runs was a grand slam--the first of her career. Gabi Turner also went 4-for-10 (.400) with four runs scored. Six Marauders posted an on base percentage of better than .450 in the series.
  • Millersville totaled 24 runs in its two wins, and the 14 runs in the opener were the most ever scored against Kutztown.
  • Maddie Guinane provided the Marauders with a steady effort in the circle, totaling a team-leading 12 innings with seven strikeouts over three appearances and two starts.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Chestnut Hill, Bloomfield and Jefferson all open their seasons against Millersville.
  • Chestnut Hill started 2020 with a 1-5 record that included an extra-inning loss to PSAC member Mansfield. The Griffins were voted 12th in the CACC Preseason Poll. DP Gabrielle O'Byrne led Chestnut Hill with a .467 average and two homers in the abbreviated 2020 season.
  • Bloomfield was voted seventh in the CACC preseason poll after a 1-9 start against a very challenging schedule in the 2020 season.
  • Jefferson opened 2020 0-4 with losses to West Chester and Millersville before its season came to an end. They did not score a run in those four games.
  • Jefferson is an exceedingly young team in 2021 with only three seniors and one junior on the roster. Five players from the starting lineup that played Millersville in 2020 return in 2021.
Opening up against conference opponents is tough because you usually have an opportunity to work (adjustments) out before conference play. We are really lucky to have a bye weekend coming up and play two non-conference opponents.
Jen Probst, Millersville Head Coach

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville leads the all-time series against Jefferson 23-3, but while Millersville won 19 of the first 20 meetings, Jefferson split doubleheaders with Millersville in both 2018 and 2019. Each of Jefferson's last two wins have come by one run (7-6 in 2019 and 5-4 in 2018).
  • Millersville swept last season's doubleheader by scores of 5-0 and 2-0. This marked the 10th time in the last 14 meetings that Millersville limited Jefferson to two runs or fewer. Faith Willenbrock recorded an RBI double in game one and an RBI single in game two. Gabi Turner tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout in game two after hitting a home run in the opener.
  • Millersville and Chestnut Hill last played on April 3, 2019 with the teams splitting a doubleheader. Millersville won game one 6-3 with Willenbrock and Brianna White hitting home runs. Chestnut Hill won game two 6-2, using an Ariel Magee three-run home run in the sixth to pull away.
  • The teams have split the last four meetings but Millersville leads the all-time series 6-2 with the first meeting coming in 2013.
  • Millersville and Bloomfield will meet for the first time Saturday.

RECORD WATCH

  • Willenbrock now has 99 RBIs and is just 17 shy of passing Brittany Smith for first all-time in the Millersville record books.
  • Willenbrock is 23 runs and 29 hits outside the career top 10 list and has accomplished all of this in just 102 career games and 313 career at bats. Nine of the 10 players ranked in the top 10 for hits in a career totaled at least 500 career at bats.
