Marauders' NCAA Tournament run comes to an end against No. 5 Charleston

RINDGE, N.H. – Millersville men's soccer saw its NCAA Tournament run and season come to a close Saturday in the NCAA Quarterfinals, nearly upsetting No. 5 Charleston (W.Va.) in double-overtime before fallingĀ 2-1 on a goal in the final minutes of action.

After advanceing on penalty kicks in each of the last two rounds, Millersville nearly pushed the match to the extra round again. But with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime, Charleston's Alexis Ledoux sent a pin-point cross into the Marauder box that resulted in a Lucas Christenson game-winning header.

Millersville opened the scoring up late in first-half play, as Bob Hennessey intercepted a Charleston pass in the 42' and crossed a ball from the right sideline to a sprinting Richy Valverde for the first lead of the match. The Marauders would then sit on defense for a majority of the second, attempting to outlast the defending national champions. However, the Golden Eagles managed to draw a PK in the 71' off a Jadon Courtney foul in the box, Charleston's Gabriel Rodriguez was able to notch an equalizer out of the PK with 20 minutes remaining in regulation.Ā

  • 42' | The PSAC Tournament MVP and scorer of two consecutive fifth-round PK's that helped 'Ville advance in the tournament provided the Marauder fans with another unforgettable moment. All momentum was leaning towards the defending national champions until a pass got away from Charleston and Bob Hennessey retrieved it, taking it down the sideline and centering a ball for Freshman, Valverde for the first score of the afternoon.
  • 71' | A Marauder foul in the box resulted in a chance for Charleston to tie the game with less than 20 minutes remaining. Rodriguez sent the ball right, as Bobby Bosch dove left, to equal the score at one.
  • 108' | With less than two minutes remaining in double-overtime Alexis Ledoux was able to sore a ball over the Marauder defense for a Lucas Christenson header into the top-corner of Millersville's net, ending the Marauders' magical postseason run. Charleston will now head to Colorado Springs for the NCAA semifinals.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
  • On putting Millersville on the map: "I don't think we could have done too much more. We held the No. 4 team in the nation, then were within 75 seconds of taking the defending national champions all the way to PK's. We were that close to the final four so I think that should get us noticed. The important thing is to do this type of thing on a more regular basis now. That's the real challenge, and a very difficult one, but we are ready for it."
  • On overcoming difficulties early in the season:Ā "The only reason we got this far was because of the difficulties we had during the season. It taught us lessons, it battle hardened us and gave us the experience we needed to face up to this level of team. This was an amazing run and we accomplished so much while creating great memories. I always say I want to provide experiences for my players, and I could not be prouder or happier to have shared this experience with this fantastic group of players and young men."
