No. 1 Shippensburg rallies to survive Millersville in PSAC Semifinals

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – No. 5 Millersville went to Shippensburg Friday thinking upset in the PSAC Semifinals. And they came as close as any of Shippensburg's first 17 opponents to pulling off that feat. Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the third quarter on a Hannah Brown goal, but the undefeated Raiders scored with 6:35 remaining to force overtime, and the nation's leading scorer, Jazmin Petrantonio, put Shippensburg in the PSAC Championship game with a goal off a penalty corner for a 2-1 Raiders win.

Shippensburg improved to 17-0 and kept alive its streak of at least two goals scored in every game this season. The game-winner was Petrantonio's 35th goal of the season, and the assist came from Jenna Sluymer, who ranks second in Division II in points.

Brown's third-quarter goal was the first scored against Shippensburg in more than six games and the first goal scored at Shippensburg since Sept. 26. Millersville was only the second team this season to play Shippensburg into overtime and the first to do it at Robb Sports Complex where the Raiders have outscored opponents 47-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Shippensburg finished with a 25-6 advantage in shots and a 15-4 edge in penalty corners, but the Marauders made the most of their chances, and freshman goalkeeper Kerstin Koons, recently named All-PSAC First Team, lived up to that billing with a career-high 11 saves. She and the Millersville defense kept the Raiders scoreless for more than 53 minutes. The Marauders held up against three consecutive corners in the final minutes of the first half, and Koons made seven saves over the final 30 minutes.
• Millersville started each half aggressively, and it paid off in the third quarter, drawing a penalty corner 2:27 into the action. The insert went to Ashlynn Lennon who worked the ball to the right side of the circle for Brown. With room to work, Brown hit a laser that got through the Ship keeper and a defender for a 1-0 Millersville lead.
• Shippensburg turned the tide in the fourth quarter, challenging Koons multiple times before drawing the penalty corner that set up the game-tying score. Sluymer took the first shot, and Koons dropped to the turf to make the save. The ricochet went right to Caitlyn Wink who popped it over Koons and just past a pair of Marauder defenders.
• Millersville nearly won the game in the closing seconds of overtime. The Marauders earned a penalty corner and after working the ball around the circle, Georgia Werkiser's shot off a loose ball hit the left post with just 26 seconds to play.
• Shippensburg earned the first offensive opportunity in the seven-on-seven overtime with a penalty corner. Millersville started before the insert, and that gave Shippensburg a chance with just two defenders with Koons. The disadvantage was too much as Sluymer found Petrantonio for the winner.

REACTION FROM HEAD COACH SHELLY BEHRENS
• On the team's performance: "We learned some things about ourselves from game one vs. Shippensburg to this game. We were definitely not the same team that we were the first time. We were the aggressor, got stops in the midfield. The kids did everything they could but it was unfortunate to not have the end of the game we wanted. I have no issues with Millersville field hockey players. They played their guts out. They executed well."
• On the performance of Koons: "Kerstin played amazing. They scored that one on the second attempt, and she made a great save on the first attempt. She's the most consistent goalkeeper I've ever coached. Her mindset, demeanor, work ethic day in and day out is exceptional. Not much phases her. It's a credit to her to how she responds whether up, down or in-between. I can't say enough about her."
• On the message to the team entering the fourth quarter with the lead: "We wanted to execute, play smart and play fast. We didn't want to time waste. We wanted to get a second goal. Our approach to the fourth was smart and good. There are some things that I can't explain that happened in the fourth that didn't go our way. This is such a fun group to coach. They've done everything I've asked and more."

NOTES
• Shippensburg snapped Millersville's PSAC Tournament streak of five consecutive wins over the Raiders.
• Shippensburg was limited to two goals in a game just four times on the season, and Millersville did it twice.
• Koons faced a career-high in shots and made double-digit saves for the second time this season.
• Brown's goal was her seventh of the season.
• Millersville's PSAC Semifinals appearance was its ninth in a row. The 15 wins are tied for the fifth-most in Millersville history.
