ABOUT THE GAME

  • Strong play late in the season has been a common theme for Steve Widdowson coached teams, and he now has another group with a chance to make a run in the NCAA tournament. The Millersville men's soccer program is set to host its first NCAA tournament game since the 2015 season. The Marauders were seeded fourth in Super Region 1, which gave them the luxury of home field advantage. They'll invite Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West foe, No. 5 Gannon, in from Erie, Pa. for a rematch of last Sunday's PSAC Final in which the Marauders won, 2-0. The game will take place on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. on Pucillo Field.
  • Millersville will be looking for its first NCAA tourney win since 2013 when they took down PSAC West opponent, Slippery Rock to advance to the Regional Championship. The Marauders have suffered two one-goal losses in their most recent appearances, one coming in 2018 to Charleston, the other in 2019 to Post, both of whom are in their corner of the bracket this year.
  • As for the Golden Knights, they ‘re most recent NCAA tournament victory came in 2019 over Assumption College in dominate fashion, as they won 5-0 to advance. Prior to 2019, Gannon hadn’t made a tournament appearance since the 2012 season when they made it to the Regional Championship.
  • ‘The winner of Saturday's match with advance to play the winner of No. 1 Franklin & Pierce and No. 9 Post in the third round.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • The Marauders have been on a tear in their last six outings, outscoring opponents 14-2, and firing in 50 shots on goal in that time.
  • Spencer Shortt scored a goal late in the PSAC Semifinal match against Mercyhurst to clinch a 2-0 victory for Millersville. Shortt, paired with Calamia, and Hennessey is proving to be a scary sight for opposing defenses.
  • Anthony Calamia led the team in the PSAC tournament with three goals, including two against West Chester in what ended up being the Marauders' closest tourney game. His other score came in the 69' against Gannon, as the redshirt junior put his team up two en route to their third PSAC Title.
  • Bob Hennessey was named PSAC Tournament MVP for his efforts over the weekend. Assisting in two goals for Millersville in the semifinal and final. The field opens up when Hennessey has the ball.
  • Redshirt senior and captain Matteo Adiletta, was able to keep his career alive with a magnificent goal in the PSAC Title game that ultimately propelled Millersville over Gannon. Fellow captain, Nik Provazzo, will join Adiletta as the most tenured players on the roster, they will provide experience for a Millersville team looking to make a deep run.
  • Bobby Bosch has given up two goals in his last six starts and will look to continue the strong play heading into Saturday's home matchup with the Gannon. Bosch didn't see much of the Golden Knights last Sunday, as they were only able to send eight shots, one landing on frame.
  • Marauder defenders Aaron Maynard, Mike Kreider, and Jadon Courtney are all top-five in minutes played on the team this season and have played huge rolls in a rock-solid defense.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS

  • Gannon finished as the No. 2  team in the PSAC West during the regular season, finishing with a 7-1-2 conference record with their only loss coming to Mercyhurst, who Millersville took down in the PSAC Semifinals.
  • Gannon's only other two losses of the season came against Wilmington, who is the No. 3 team in Super Region 1, and Millersville last Sunday.
  • Sergio Del Castillo leads the Golden Knights in goals with 12 on the year. Just behind him is Tinashe Katsande with 10.
  • The Golden Knights are outscoring their opponents 39-20 on the year and outshooting them 313-235, including a 129-119 edge on frame.
