Millersville celebrates Senior Day Saturday vs. Mansfield

10/20/2021 9:24:00 AM

REGIONAL LINKS

  • Series: Millersville, 28-15
  • Series Streak: Mansfield, 1
  • First Meeting: 1985 (W, 3-0)
  • Last Meeting: 2019 (L, 1-3)
  • Record at Home: 7-5 (since 2002)

ABOUT THE GAME

  • Millersville's overtime win at Bloomsburg on Tuesday paired with West Chester's 1-0 loss at East Stroudsburg moved Millersville into a tie for third place in the PSAC standings with three regular season games remaining. On Saturday, the Marauders host a Mansfield club tied for the sixth and final playoff spot and needs wins to keep pace with IUP. Millersville does not own the head-to-head tiebreaker with West Chester, but still could finish with the No. 2 seed by winning all three of its remaining regular season games.
  • Millersville is 9-0 at home with two regular season home games left on the schedule. The last time Millersville went undefeated at home in the regular season was in 2015. That team went 18-3, reaching the PSAC championship game and the NCAA Tournament.
We saw some good performances from players off the bench, and the goalkeeping was good again. We are good with overtime. I'd like to see us play with more composure and better hockey IQ at times, but we keep learning and getting better and keep working through it.
Shelly Behrens, Millersville head coach

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Goalkeeper Kerstin Koons is making a strong case for the PSAC Freshman of the Year award. She currently ranks third in Division II and first in the PSAC in save percentage at .840, and her .61 goals against average leads the PSAC and ranks second in Division II.
  • As a team, Millersville owns the third-best winning percentage (.857) in Division II, ranking behind only undefeated Shippensburg and Assumption (.929).
  • Millersville has scored five or more goals eight times and ranks third in Division II in scoring average at 4.16 goals per game. NCAA statistical rankings are available back to 2010, and in that time span, Millersville has never finished the season in the top five in scoring.
  • As a team, Millersville leads the nation in goals against average at 0.56. The last time Millersville led the nation in that category through an entire season was 2015. Millersville led the country in goals against average in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
  • Hannah Brown's overtime game-winner against Bloomsburg improved Millersville to 2-0 in overtime games this season after going 0-4 in OT games in 2019. Brown is second on the team in game-winners with two. Kate Strickland leads the team with three.
  • Strickland produced her second hat trick of the season last week. Strickland now has 10 goals and Bri Harsh has 11. It is the first time that Millersville has had two double-digit goal scorers since the national championship season of 2014 when Katelynn Zapp scored 16 and Champayne Hess totaled 11.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS

  • Mansfield had won three in a row--all by shutout--before its 1-0 loss to Kutztown Tuesday. Mansfield has played teams tough as its last three losses have all come by one goal, and it defended No. 1 Shippensburg and No. 2 West Chester well, allowing two goals in each of those games. Mansfield ranks 10th in Division II in goals against average, allowing just 1.24 per game.
  • A big reason for that is goalkeeper August Lewis, who is 15th in the country in saves per game, and she's allowed just one goal in her last four games spanning 225 minutes.
  • Alex Easterling is Mansfield's top goal scorer with 12 goals and five game-winners. She is tied for third in the PSAC in goals scored.

THE LAST TIME OUT

  • Millersville: Millersville 1, Bloomsburg 0 (Oct. 19, 2021) - No. 3 Millersville fought its way through 60 scoreless minutes with Bloomsburg, but just 28 seconds into overtime, Hannah Brown buried the game-winner to lift Millersville to a 1-0 PSAC road win.
  • Mansfield: Kutztown 1, Mansfield 0 (Oct. 19, 2021) Sophomore Riley Kleinfelter made two defensive saves and sophomore August Lewis recorded 12 saves but Kutztown scored the lone goal in the first quarter and out-shot Mansfield 20-5 in the game.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville had won 10 consecutive meetings before Mansfield brought that streak to an end by a 3-1 score in 2019. Prior to that, Millersville had won eight in a row by shutout and seven in a row in Mansfield. Oddly, Mansfield has made just one trip to Millersville since 2015, and that resulted in a 3-0 Millersville win in 2018. Under the direction of Shelly Behrens, Millersville is 6-0 at home against Mansfield. That streak dates back to a 1-0 overtime win in 2008, which was Behrens' first win as Millersville's head coach.
  • The Last Meeting - Mansfield 3, Millersville 1 (Oct. 26, 2019) Facing a two-goal deficit in the first quarter, Millersville answered back with a Kyra Brakefield deflection but struggled to find the equalizer in the second half. Mansfield added a security goal in the fourth quarter to take the game 3-1.
