No. 1 Shippensburg gets by No. 3 Millersville

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - No. 1 Shippensburg received a second-quarter goal from Jazmin Petrantonio, the nation's leading goal scorer, and added another in the final seconds to ward off a stiff challenge from No. 3 Millersville Tuesday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.

Millersville's (10-2, 3-2 PSAC) only two losses on the season have now come to teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the latest Division II poll and both were on the road. Shippensburg remained undefeated at 11-0 (6-0 PSAC).

Millersville's freshman goalkeeper Kerstin Koons made a career-high 11 saves, and kept the Marauders within striking distance until the final seconds of the game. Shippensburg controlled possession in the first half, and did not surrender a shot to the Marauders until the third quarter. Millersville's late rush was also walled off by a clean-playing Shippensburg defense as it did not give up a single penalty corner chance to the visiting Marauders.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Shippensburg played the role of aggressor from the start, earning three penalty corners and taking six shots in the game's first three minutes. The Raiders' took the lead on Petrantonio's 19th goal of the season, 1:42 into the second quarter.
• Millersville adjusted and found more offensive chances in the final two quarters, but those were still few. Kristin Strijdom took the Marauders' first shot with 1:33 left in the third quarter, and the attempt was saved by Ship's Lindsay Tripodo. Qhayiya Nogoduka had two chances with eight minutes remaining. Her first shot was saved and after collecting the rebound, she pushed a shot wide.
• With Millersville pressing toward the Shippensburg goal, the Raiders slipped a long pass through a thinned out Marauder defense, and Nya Gilcrist and Adrienne McGarrigle connected with eight seconds to play for the Raiders' second goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Shippensburg held a 21-3 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in corners. Shippensburg entered the day averaging 4.80 goals per game. Millersville held Shippensburg to its third fewest-shot attempts and its lowest goal scoring total of the season.
• It was just the second time all season that Millersville was held to fewer than 14 shot attempts.

REACTION FROM COACH SHELLY BEHRENS
• On Shippensburg holding off the attack in the fourth quarter
: "I thought the third and fourth quarter was really positive on the attack. We couldn't just get that one final push through or corner call. I love how we played in the third and fourth quarter especially. Great energy. In the second quarter we got a little stuffed. We sat back a little bit. But that's something we can learn from. I look forward to getting better. I will say this, this team gets better every day."
• On what the team can learn from the loss: "It's not something we can necessarily answer right now, but we'll continue to get better and learn. It's OK to struggle. We've been able to struggle and still win games at times this year. Hats off to Ship today."
• On the goalkeeping keeping the game close: "The message in the second half was 'let's play the game, not try to win the game.' I think we were trying to win the game in the first two quarters as opposed to playing the game. But we didn't give up a corner goal. Kerstin and our team defense played well. Kerstin was lights out. She played really well again today."

NOTES
• Millersville and Shippensburg have split the last four meetings, and Tuesday's 2-0 score marked just the second time in the last 12 meetings that a game was decided by more than one goal.
