"Get to Know the Marauders" is a feature that gives fans a more in-depth look at the coaches and staff of Millersville Athletics. Shelly Behrens, a three-time PSAC Coach of the Year, became Millersville field hockey's head coach in 2008 and has since turned it into one of the dominant programs in Division II, winning two PSAC championships and the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship. At the beach with faithful companion, Finn.Best thing about being a Marauder? "The student-athletes and MU relationships--athletics and across campus--the MU relationships are like no other."
Favorite coaching moment? "Too many to mention and varies by team! This past season, beating Ship in double ot to go to PSAC semis."
Favorite memory as an athlete or fan? "As fan, watching my MU colleagues' successes. As an athlete, winning an NCAA championship with my Old Dominion field hockey mates."
Favorite professional athlete? "Not so much an athlete, but professional coaches Gregg Popovich and Herb Brooks because of their ability to innovate."
Most amazing on-field moment from your coaching career? "Winning the 2014 NCAA Championship. Amazing to see a group of women give so much for the team."
Three books that inspired you as a coach? "'Little Engine That Could,' 'This is Water,' and 'The Art of War.'"
Behrens on a recent trip to Florida.Who inspired you to coach? "My mom and dad early on to high school coach and MU alum Linda Kresier and my college coach Beth Anders.'
Funniest player you've coached? "WAY TO MANY TO MENTION! I would have to break it down by years and even then would be tough! My team had me laughing on Zoom meetings!"
Favorite bus ride activity? "Being in my iPad and listening the kids try to solve something! Their discussions are funny!"
What do you do in your time away from the sport? "Family time, beach time and my friends, and reading as well."
Three movies you could watch any time? "'Breaking Away,' 'Field of Dreams,' 'Hoosiers.'"
Your workout or car trip playlist? "My own personal creation! Always includes Pink!"
Favorite series to binge watch? "'Madam Secretary.'"
What would you do if you weren't coaching? "Building things! Architect--which is like coaching as I have a vision and see where I want to help it grow or become."
What is a talent that fans wouldn't know about? "I am artsy!"
