Bevard and Turner spin shutouts as Marauders sweep Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Emma Bevard and freshman Gabi Turner combined to toss 14 shutout innings as Millersville swept a doubleheader at Jefferson by scores of 5-0 and 2-0 Monday afternoon.

Bevard (3-2) surrendered just three hits and did not walk a batter in her game one complete game effort, and Turner (2-0) followed with five strikeouts while allowing two hits and one walk in seven innings.

The sweep pushed Millersville above .500 to 5-4 while Jefferson dropped to 0-4. Millersville has won three of its last four games by shutout.

GAME ONE (MILLERSVILLE 5, JEFFERSON 0)
• Bevard limited Jefferson to three singles and not a single runner reached second base. Four of her seven innings went in order.
• The top of Millersville's lineup provided the offense with the No.1  to No. 5 hitters totaling all nine hits and all five runs scored.
Devan Masciulli scored twice, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Karysa Karas went 2-for-2, and Brianna Battavio added two hits, an RBI and run scored. Faith Willenbrock drove in a pair with one hit, and Turner posted a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a run and RBI.
• Masciulli got the Marauders started with a double to start the game. Karas followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 Millersville lead. It was Karas' turn to start a run-scoring inning the fourth as she beat out an infield single. With two on, Willenbrock doubled, scoring both runners. Millersville added a run in the fifth on Battavio's RBI single, and Turner hit her second career home run in the sixth.

GAME TWO (MILLERSVILLE 2, JEFFERSON 0)
• Turner limited the Rams to just two baserunners (both in the second inning) in her first five innings, and after the second, no Jefferson player reached scoring position. A one-out single in the second was cut down on a fielder's choice to end the inning, and after an error started the bottom of the seventh, Bevard quickly retired the side.
• Millersville's bats, however, struck in the first. Masciulli reached on an error to leadoff the game, and with two outs, Willenbrock scored Masciulli with a single to left. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Turner led off with a double, and pinch runner Karlie Heft came home on Rebecca Blatt's RBI double.
• Millersville managed just three hits in the game--one in the first and two in the seventh. Masciulli reached base twice, drawing a walk in the third.

REACTION FROM COACH JEN PROBST
On the top of the lineup production: "Our top of the order is stacking up the quality at bats. They are moving runners and taking walks. It sets the table for multiple RBIs when we get that big hit. Today we selflessly passed the bat, especially in game two where most of our outs were hard liners and deep flys."
On Turner's first career complete game: "Gabi worked on fine-tuning her pitches this week and had a great positive mindset going into today. I'm proud of the way she and Emma were able to keep hitters off-balance."

NOTES
• Millersville has hit five home runs in its last three games.
• Willenbrock, who was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week on Monday, has recorded a hit in all four of her games played.
• Turner has hit in four consecutive games, and her game two pitching outing of was the longest of her four career appearances.

UP NEXT
• Millersville now embarks on a seven-day, 12-game trip to Clermont, Fla. The trip begins against Ashland on Saturday, March 14 at 10:15 a.m.
