Shorthanded Marauders fall to Goldey-Beacom

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - A shorthanded Millersville women's tennis team took on one of the best in the East region Sunday afternoon at the McComsey Tennis Courts.

Millersville (6-3), playing without No. 1 Esperanza Contador, lost to Goldey-Beacom College, 7-0.

The Lightning, which improved to 10-2 overall, entered the spring season ranked No. 5 in the East Region via January's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Goldey-Beacom's flight one and flight two players, Imane Van Veen and Sara Edebo, were also ranked in the region.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
Hannah Bryan, sliding in for Contador, debuted at flight one singles. Facing the tall task of playing against Van Veen, the sophomore showed good effort in a straight-set defeat, 0-6, 4-6.
• Freshman Julie Wallace faced a similar fate in her flight two matchup, dropping her match to Edebo by the same score.
Victoria Hanus, Jasmine Morris and Corrine Grohoski – playing in flights four, five and six, respectively – all pushed their opponents to the limit.
• After a tough loss in the first set, Hanus battled back in the second, ultimately forcing a tiebreak. She lost the second-set tiebreak to lose the match, 5-7. Morris lost her first set tiebreak, 6-8, and lost by a slim margin again in the second set, 4-6. Grohoski, making only her fourth singles appearance of the season, lost a three-set heartbreaker, 6-3, 6-7, 12-14.
• With Contador out, Bryan and Wallace played in flight one doubles action for the first time all season. The Marauders failed to win a match in doubles action.

FACING THE BEST
At 10-2 with a regional ranking, Goldey-Beacom is the best team Millersville has played all season.

The schedule isn't going to get any easier. The Marauders will square off with Division I Bowling Green, Auburn-Montgomery (5-4), Indiana University East and Embry-Riddle (7-1) before opening conference action.

QUOTABLE
"The overall team score doesn't reflect it, but we played really well today," head coach Matt Helsel said. "I'm very proud of how we played and excited to see how we do once we are back to full strength. I hate to lose as much as the next guy, but today wasn't about the score. Today was about playing hard and we did that extremely well."

UP NEXT
Millersville will play at the University of the District of Columbia on Friday, March 13. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m.
