KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Kutztown shot nearly 60 percent from the field and sank eight 3-pointers in the second half to turn a double-digit deficit into a 72-68 win over the streaking Millersville Marauders Wednesday night.
The Marauders led by as many as 13 points before Kutztown caught fire on offense. After scoring 28 points in the first 20 minutes, Kutztown scored 44 points--outscoring the Marauders by 14--in the second half. While Millersville scored its fewest points since Jan. 3, it also allowed double-digit 3-pointers for only the third time this season. Over the last 13 games, only one other Millersville opponent has shot better than 47 percent--which Kutztown did Wednesday (47.5).
Still, trailing 70-68, Millersville had the ball with a chance to take the lead or tie the game with time running out, but a
James Sullivan pull-up jumper from the right elbow rattled out with a little over a second to play.
The loss stopped Millersville's winning streak at four. Millersville is 7-3 in its last 10 games and those three losses have come by a combined total of four points.
Millersville sophomore
Justin Nwosu led all scorers and matched his career-high with 26 points for the second time in three games. Kutztown's Wesley Butler totaled 22, but Ryan Bernstein provided fuel for Kutztown's second half comeback by scoring 13 of his 16 and hitting 4-of-5 3-pointers in the half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
•
Khari Williams' 3-pointer 37 seconds into the second half gave Millersville its largest lead of the game at 41-28. But Kutztown started sinking shots at the same time that Millersville's offense bogged down. Starting with a Sean Griffin layup with 17:19 left, over the next seven minutes, Kutztown outscored Millersville 22-10 to a lead at 52-51.
• Millersville played from behind until
Caden Najdawi's bucket with 4:55 left put the Marauders in front, 61-60. However, Tarojae Brake and Bernstein sank 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and Millersville never again evened the score on took the lead. With 1:32 left, Nwosu sank a 3-pointer to pull Millersville to within two at 70-68, and the Marauders forced a miss at the other end.
Khari Williams missed a 3-pointer with 50 seconds, but an offensive foul on Butler gave Millersville the ball with 22 seconds to play. The Marauders first went to Najdawi on the left block, but a quick double team forced him to pass out. He found Sullivan, who drove to his right and pulled up with time expiring. His shot went half-way down before popping out. Kutztown's Brake grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and subsequently made both foul shots.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• After having at least four players score in double-figures in the previous seven games, only two Marauders hit that mark on Wednesday with Williams' 12 points backing Nwosu's 26. Millersville made just five threes after making at least nine threes in each of its previous four games. The Marauders also attempted just 14 3-pointers--the third-fewest of the season.
• Millersville made 15-of-16 free throws.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH CASEY STITZEL
•
On surrendering the 13-point lead: "We didn't have the same energy in the second half. Kutztown got all the loose balls and we didn't share it. We got away from the things that got us seven out of nine wins."
•
On the final offensive possession: "James got a great look. We ran our ball screen roll replace and I actually thought we could have gotten an open three. But we were happy with the look that James got."
