MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – This Saturday when Millersville women's basketball recognizes its senior class before the last game of the season, just one Marauder will take center court.
Courtney Dimoff is the lone senior on the 16-person roster and over her four years at Millersville she has made a name for herself as a true leader.
"She isn't just a shooter," head coach
Mary Fleig said. "She is a true and complete basketball player that has had to play every position on the court. She gives her heart and is honest and true to the team."
Dimoff closes her career ranked second all-time in 3-point field goals made with 168. On and off the court the senior guard is always working to propel her team forward.
"I try to lead vocally and by example," said Dimoff. "Especially off the floor, getting good grades and doing what my coaches ask of me. I have definitely learned from those before me and try to implement not only what they taught me, but also go beyond that to create something better for those after me."
"When she is on the court she is very vocal," Fleig said. "She knows our system. She grew up in a coaching family so she really is like another coach out on the court."
Basketball has been a part of Dimoff's life since she was young. Her father, Don, served as her coach the majority of her life which formulated a special bond over the sport they both love.
"Growing up, having my dad as my coach definitely helped with my basketball IQ," Dimoff reflected. "Because I have been around basketball my whole life I can understand the game and other players better. Having him as a mentor, a dad, and a coach throughout my life has molded me into the basketball player that I am."
When the time came to decide where to continue her basketball career past high school, Millersville was the perfect fit.
"I've known that kid since she was little," said Fleig. "She'd come to the gym with her dad when he helped me with camps. I have seen her grow from elementary school so having that connection to her when recruiting her made it fun."
As with any team, Dimoff and the Marauders have experienced highs and lows when it comes to the basketball season. In the moments that matter the most, Dimoff motivates her teammates to comeback stronger and better.
"There are so many times where we could just put our heads down, and I know a lot of the girls look to me and Lauren (Lister) as their captains to keep going," Dimoff said. "If we decide to put our heads down, then it's not going to help anyone on the floor."
"Everyone says that someone is a great kid, but the qualities she has, her integrity, honesty and accountability, have been evident through some hard times," Fleig said. "She really knows the pulse of the team and steps up to help as a captain when we need it."
The way she helps her teammates also shows up in the stats. She's the team leader in assists with a career-high 3.6 per game. Her 233 career assists ranks 16th all-time.
As Dimoff prepares for her last appearance on the court at Pucillo Gymnasium as a member of the Millersville women's basketball team, she spends time reflecting on her career as a Marauder, as well as preparing for what the future may hold.
"I want people to remember me as a leader--as someone who helps her teammates and does whatever is needed to get the job done," said Dimoff.
Fleig has nothing but the highest hopes for Dimoff as she embarks on her next adventure. Dimoff is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete with a 3.94 GPA in sports business.
"She is so mature beyond her years," said Fleig. "She's such a hard worker and will be able to go into anything she wants to do. She is going to be successful at whatever it is she does."
