No. 17 Saint Anselm tops Millersville in weekend finale

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Millersville softball's opening weekend came to a close Sunday with a 10-2 loss to 17th-ranked Saint Anselm.

Saint Anselm used the long ball to power its offense, hitting a two-run homer in the first and another two-run homer in the sixth. The Hawks stayed unbeaten with a 5-0 record after the win while Millersville lost its third in a row to drop to 2-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Anselm started scoring in the first, taking advantage of a leadoff walk when No. 3 hitter Lauren Washburn hit a home run to left. The Hawks added a pair of unearned runs in the second, and Maggie Murphy gave her team a 5-0 lead with an RBI single in the fourth.
• Millersville chipped into that lead in the bottom of the fourth. Brianna Battavio led off with a double to left-center, and Karysa Karas followed with a single. Two batters later, freshman Sami Fried doubled home Battavio, and Rebecca Blatt plated Karas with an RBI groud out.
• Millersville, which left three runners at third base, threatened again in the fifth but could not score despite the first three batters of the inning reaching base. The Hawks widened the gap in the sixth by putting five runs on the board, including two on Maddie Leite's home run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Battavio reached base twice with her double and was hit by a pitch. The Marauders also received hits from Devan Masciulli and Hunter Little.
• Saint Anselm's Courtney Fisher picked up the win by allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH JEN PROBST
• On the team's opening weekend:
"We definitely learned a lot and got better this weekend. We need to work on consistency with our approach in the batter's box and on the mound as we had some real highlights but also times we could have been more aggressive or hit spots."
• On any surprises in the season's first games: "I was really happy with our outfield play. Their throws and ability to cut doubles into singles was great to see."

NOTES
•
Battavio had at least one hit in each of the first five games and went 7-for-15 on the weekend. Alexis Staniec drew a team-leading three walks and posted a .455 on base percentage in her four starts.
