Senior Spotlight on Women's Volleyball

By Ethan Hulsey, Director of Athletic Communications

Early in the 2018 season, Lindsey Blevins was quoted as saying, "My goal is get one of my years on a banner." She and her classmates Kat Forry and Courtney Turocy didn't just put one year on a banner in Pucillo Gymnasium--they put two. The trio of seniors, whose final year in Millersville black and gold was wiped out by the worldwide pandemic, significantly impacted the volleyball program's on-court success.

As freshmen in 2017, Blevins, Forry and Turocy helped the Marauders to 18 wins--the most for the program in 18 years. In 2018, all three played key roles in Millersville's first PSAC East championship in nearly two decades. Then, in 2019, they were a part of a record-setting 26-9 campaign and the team's second-ever NCAA Tournament berth (and first since 1995).

“They were a part of that special class of freshmen that helped turn our program from a middle of the road conference team to a very good program,” said Millersville head coach Brian Smith. “Lindsey made an impact on our program from day one. She was one piece of the puzzle that allowed Millersville to average 20 wins in the three seasons she was on the court. Kat provided the team and our defense with both leadership and a standard of toughness that Brooklyn Smith had established for the four years before Kat arrived. We had a growing amount of talent but it's teammates like Courtney that provided the glue and the chemistry.”

During their memorable careers, Blevins, Forry and Turocy combined for 808 sets and 241 matches played, a 60-31 record and .659 winning percentage--Millersville's best three-year stretch since 1997-99.

LINDSEY BLEVINS

Lindsey Blevins is one of the best shot makers I have coached at Millersville. She is very unique in her ability to see and read the defense and have the abilities to select and execute the right shot in order to find the floor with the ball. Lindsey has a calm exterior on the court but a burning competitive fire inside. She always wants the ball but is also a very selfless player and a strong teammate. When our opponents stepped onto the court, Lindsey was always number one or two on their list of players to try and slow down. She was on pace to finish no lower than the top three in kills and had a shot at the top spot.

In just three seasons, Blevins established herself as one of the most productive offensive performers in program history. An All-PSAC Third Team selection in 2019 and a second team honoree in 2018, Blevins is one of just 18 Marauders to be a two-time All-PSAC pick. She piled up incredible offensive numbers despite playing alongside Jayci Suseland Erin Harman--players ranked first and third respectively in career kills. Blevins ranks eighth all-time with 1,062 and is the only three-year player in the top 10. She averaged 354 kills per season, and her 395 in 2019 rank sixth all-time. In October, the program recognized its top 30 players for its 30th anniversary, and Blevins was among those honored. Blevins is set to graduate in May with a degree in communications.

KAT FORRY

Within her three seasons, Kat was able to finish fourth all time in program digs and would have likely finished second all-time with ease. She had no issues demanding more from her teammates and hated to give up a single point in our matches. Kat had her most digs in a single match on what we now know would be her second to last match as a Marauder, helping us secure our 26th win, which is a school record.

A starter from match one, Forry anchored the Marauders' defensive efforts as the libero. She never missed a set in three years, playing all 322. Forry capped her career with 1,560 digs, ranking fourth on the all-time list and is the only three-year player ranked in the top 10. Her 567 digs in 2019 rank seventh all-time, and her 518 in 2018 rank 10th. She is one of three players with two top-10 seasons. Forry also ranked in the top six in the PSAC in digs two times. Memorably, she recorded 45 digs in the NCAA Tournament victory against Shippensburg. She was recognized as one of the program's top 30 players for its 30th anniversary celebration. Forry is set to graduate in May with a degree in early childhood and special education.

COURTNEY TUROCY

Courtney is one of the hardest workers and best teammates I have had in my career as the head coach. She has great character and was a PSAC Scholar-Athlete as well. Courtney brought her best game and great attitude each day to practice and supported all her teammates all the time. If I had to put together a top 10 list of favorite people I’ve had the honor of coaching, she makes that every time.

Turocy played in 59 matches, including 28 during a 2018 season in which Millersville won the PSAC East. A left-hander, she found a role as an effective server and totaled 58 aces, including a career-high 30 as a freshman in 2017--a total that ranked second on the team. Turocy also played a key role defensively in 2018, totaling 133 digs and 17 blocks. Five of those blocks came in the PSAC Quarterfinals against Shippensburg. As a student, Turocy was named a PSAC Scholar-Athlete in 2019. She is set to graduate in May with a degree in mathematics.
