MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – After 110 total minutes of play on a humid night at Pucillo Field, the Millersville Marauders and the No. 17 West Chester Rams played to a 2-2 draw. It was eerily similar to the last time these two rivals met, in the 2018 PSAC championship game, which was also tied after double overtime. Millersville won the title after a 4-2 advantage on penalty kicks, but there would be no such victor tonight. Instead, both teams earn a single point in the PSAC Eastern Division standings.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• West Chester came out firing in the 1st minute of the game. Stephen Thompson created some space was able to find teammate Doug Goitia, who launched a shot towards Millerville keeper
Darian McCauley. The diving McCauley got a hand on it but the velocity was too much and it sailed into the top corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
• Marauders' senior Jake Gosselin, as he has so often this season, found a way to generate offense. In the 37th minute
Mike Kreider sent a dangerous cross careening towards Gosselin in the box. West Chester keeper Daniel Good was unable to collect it cleanly and after a scrum in front of goal, Gosselin was able to get on foot on it while laying on his back. The shot had just enough speed and equalized the game 1-1.
• It was Millersville's turn to have a blistering start to a half in the 49th minute, when
Matteo Adiletta showed some flashy dribbling skills to keep the ball alive and slotted it over to
Frank Astarita in the box. Astarita took his chance well and gave the Marauders the 2-1 lead.
• The game continued to open up and was full of back-and-forth action. The Golden Rams struck back in the 54th minute, when Daniel Grindrod floated a ball into the box for the head of Stephen Thompson. He nodded it into the left side of the net to make it a 2-2 game.
• Millersville almost went ahead in the 73rd minute. Great buildup from the Marauders allowed them to thread to ball to
Anthony Calamia down the right wing. Cutting inside to the penalty box, he found himself staring at an open goal with just goalkeeper Daniel Good in front of him. Good made the resulting save to keep the game scoreless and force overtime.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
• On tonight's game and the performance of the Marauders: "It was a very intense open game. At times I think we did okay but not often enough. We often lacked composure and made poor decisions which let us down. It's an area we keep talking about and need to keep working on. If we can clean that aspect of the game up we will be in a good place."
•
On conceding the early goal and fighting back into the game: "It was a poor start and it certainly rattled us. We lacked composure for most of the first half. We talked at half time about being more patient and playing with more courage to find feet and possess the ball and that led to a better second half. It's all part of our learning process as we progress through the season."
•
On collecting a hard-earned point in the standings: "A tie was probably fair. We will take it as another step in our building process for the season. It was an entertaining battle from the sidelines I'm sure but we need to develop better control and possession so that we can control games more convincingly."
