No. 1 Millersville remains undefeated following shutout against Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Millersville field hockey team shut out Mercyhurst 6-0 Friday night on the road at Saxon Stadium in Erie, Pa.

The Marauders improve to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC. The team has earned five shutouts this season including three-straight against Pace, Adelphi and Shippensburg. The game marks the second shutout against Mercyhurst following a 5-0 win earlier in the week.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The Marauders struck early off their first penalty corner execution. Kyra Brakefield sent the ball to the top of the circle generating a series of passes between the Marauders before Emma Boutcher picked up the ball in front of the cage for the goal.
• Three minutes later, Hannah Brown found the back of the cage for the second time this season to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead over the Lakers.
• The combined defensive effort of Jordan Goddard, Madeline Stehly and Brooke Troutman proved effective at the start of the second quarter. The trio protected the cage from the Lakers' efforts to get on the board after back-to-back shots drew Autumn Peters out.
• Goddard recorded her first goal of the season off a corner inserted directly to her at the top of the circle from Asia Weaver. That gave the Marauders the 3-0 advantage with just under four minutes left in the third.
• A corner in the fourth set up the Marauders' fourth goal of the game. Erica Tarsi received the ball at the top of the circle and her initial shot pulled the Laker goalie out of the cage. Annabelle Tierney collected the ball off the pads of the goalie and dumped it to Kyra Brakefield for the tip-in on the left side of the cage.
• A Millersville breakaway in the fourth quarter led to a corner and the fifth Marauder goal. Georgia Werkiser inserted the ball and waited by the left post for the shot toward the goal from Kate Strickland. Werkiser got a stick on the ball, deflecting it into the cage for the 5-0 lead.
• With seconds left on the clock, Werkiser inserted the ball off a penalty corner to Ashlynn Lennon at the top left of the circle. Lennon fired a shot past the Mercyhurst goalie and into the cage for the final goal of the game.

COACH SHELLY BEHRENS QUOTES

• "We are a game-to-game team and each game we just want to keep improving and keep finding our way together. I said in the beginning, and all along, that this is about us growing and getting better daily. I am proud of how we competed on the road. We have a day before getting back to it."
