MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University men's tennis team snapped a six-game losing skid against the Jefferson Rams, and remained unbeaten in the process.
The Marauders (4-0) were tested Tuesday afternoon, but took down Jefferson (0-1), 5-2.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville opened the afternoon by grabbing the point in doubles action. All three doubles teams won, but it didn't come easy.
• The flight one duo of
Carlos Martinez-Lucas and
Ben Fellman were down early, but rallied to win, 6-4. At flight three, the combination of
Jose Alcazar and
Santiago Ramos won by the same score.
•
Frank Yanni and
Rodrigo Lorencin took care of business at flight two doubles. They took their set, 6-2.
• Singles action did not prove as easy, although Martinez-Lucas (flight one), Fellman (flight three), Ramos (flight five) and Alcazar (flight six) won in straight sets.
• The match of the day came at the expense of Lorencin. Matched up in flight four singles action against senior Joseph Sison, the two battled for three sets in the longest match of the day. Lorencin dropped a tight first set, 6-7, but bounced back with a victory in the second set, 7-5. The marathon continued in a tense third set, ultimately falling, 11-13.
QUOTABLE
"We started a little slow in doubles," head coach
Matt Helsel said. "Courts one and three didn't start with a lot of rhythm, but they hung around and stayed close until it came together. Getting a sweep in doubles was a great way to transition to singles. Carlos (Martiinez-Lucas), Ben (Fellman), and Santiago (Ramos) got into a great groove and never looked back. Frank (Yanni) and [
Rodrigo Lorencin] really played hard after falling behind and ended up being the last two guys on court. Really outstanding effort."
HIP-HIP, JOSE!
"We haven't beaten Jefferson since I've been here," Helsel added. "I'm most proud of Jose Alcazar, who not only won and played really well in a straight set win, but did it against the same player he lost to last year. 'Pepe' is a different player this year. It's never too late to redefine yourself."
