Baseball completes four-game sweep of Goldey-Beacom

Philadelphia, Pa. - A day after Millersville head coach Jon Shehan lamented that his team had yet to play a down-to-the-wire game, the Marauders got a challenged from Goldey-Beacom in game one and had to come-from-behind in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. The Marauders, however, took the opener 4-1 and won game two 11-6 to complete the four-game series sweep.

Millersville improved to 10-4 with the victories and extended its winning streak to seven.

GAME 1 RECAP
• Millersville manufactured a 4-1 lead after three. Two runs scored when runners on third scooted home on steal attempts of second base. Christian Del Toro scored on a wild pitch in the third, and Dominic Hardaway doubled home Ben Snyder for the team's only RBI. Millersville did not score again, but the pitching staff made sure that the three-run lead was safe.
Cordell Shannon (3-1) gave up one run through four but hit the first batter in the fifth and walked the second. Aidan Welch was called from the pen, and he filled the bases, walking the first batter he faced. Shehan stayed with Welch, however. Welch struck out the next two batters, and stranded the bases loaded with some nifty defense. Goldey-Beacom's clean-up hitter smacked a line drive right back at Welch. The ball deflected off of Welch's glove and to the third base side of the mound. Welch scrambled to his right, barehanded the ball and fired a strike to first for the final out.
Tyler Yankosky mowed through the final two innings, allowing just one base runner on a walk while striking out a pair. He recorded the team's first save of the season.
• Millersville finished with five hits, two of which belonged to Hardaway.

GAME 2 RECAP
• Goldey-Beacom put three on the board in the top of the first inning, but Millersville quickly rallied, scoring two in the first, six in the second and two more in the third. With Millersville leading 11-6 in the fifth, Goldey-Beacom threatened, loading the bases with one out. Christian Wingard entered with two on, and a bunt single loaded the bases. Wingard then got a strike out and a ground out to keep Goldey-Beacom off the board. The Lightning were held in check by Andrew Mayhew the rest of the way.
Noah Hartwell picked up his first career win, pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief work, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
• All nine Marauders in the lineup recorded a hit, and the top three--Cole Friese, Kaylor Kulina and Ben Snyder--had two hits and two runs apiece. Kulina drove in three while Hardaway and Luke Trainer both drove in two.

COACH JON SHEHAN QUOTES
• "Going into a tough stretch with good regional teams in Seton Hill, Le Moyne, Shepherd and Bloomsburg, we have our toughest stretch by far, and it is really good for us to see if we could bounce back when we took a punch to the face. I don't think we were all that prepared but we responded really well."
• "We have to do some things better: baserunning fundamentals, staying square on line drives, situational hitting, throwing breaking balls for strikes. There are things we could have done better in both games. We still have room for improvement. We are going to take lumps, we aren't going to win every game, but it is a good reminder after a 4-1 win that we aren't playing perfect baseball. We've played really well the last few weeks and it was a good tune up today."
• "(Welch) walked the first guy and usually we go to the next guy right there. But Aidan loves the pressure. He had an outstanding postseason as a freshman and he thrives in those situations. He made it a little tougher on himself but he's done it time and time again. He gets himself into jams and gets himself out. He just never seems to be rattled."

NOTES
• Millersville has scored at least eight runs in eight of the last 10 games while not allowing more than six in any of the last 10.
• Millersville is now 9-0 all-time against Goldey-Beacom.

UP NEXT
• Millersville now heads Greensburg, Pa., for two games against both Le Moyne and Seton Hill. Millersville's next nine games are all against teams that reached NCAA regionals in 2018.
