Marauders win late in game one, fall in extras in game two

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - No. 25 Millersville used a RBI single from Nick Graham and a two-run home run from Cole Friese to break a fifth-inning tie en route to a 7-4 win over Bloomsburg in Saturday's PSAC East opener. Millersville could not find the same late-inning offense in game two, however, falling 7-1 in nine innings.

Millersville's record moved to 14-7 (1-1 PSAC East) after playing its first games at home. Bloomsburg moved to 10-4 (1-1 PSAC East).

GAME 1 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 7, BLOOMSBURG 4)
• Millersville took full advantage of free passes and errors early, scoring the first three runs with just one hit and no RBIs. After Cole Friese led off the first with a single, the Marauders went hitless until the fourth. Still, they held an early lead thanks to a Bloomsburg error in the first, two hit batsmen and a two-out throwing error in the second and two more hit batsmen and a Ben Snyder's two-run single in the fourth.
• Bloomsburg evened the score in the top of the fifth, getting some help from a strong and steady breeze blowing out to left field. Cole Swiger and Kyle O'Fier hit back-to-back homers to tie the game at 4-4. Prior to the inning, Millersville starter Eli Nabholz had allowed just one unearned run and two hits. The run came in the fourth when Gianni Sinatore tripled and was awarded home plate following an errant throw that skipped out of play.
• With the game tied in the bottom of the fifth, freshman Jimmy Losh led off with a double, and Graham broke the tie with a looping single to right. One batter later, Friese boosted Millersville's lead with his fifth homer of the season.
• Tyler Yankosky came out of the pen and struck out three in two innings for his second save of the season. Aidan Welch closed out the fifth for Nabholz and got hit first win.
• Friese reached base four times and scored three times. He was hit twice, singled and hit a homer.

GAME 2 RECAP (BLOOMSBURG 7, MILLERSVILLE 1 (9 INN))
• It was a game of missed opportunities for the Marauders, as they left the go-ahead run on third base in the bottom of the sixth and left the bases loaded with a chance to end the game in the eighth. That was after leaving runners on third base in the first and third innings as well.
• Bloomsburg starter Nick Stoner entered the game having walked 13 batters in 14 1/3 innings but walked only one Marauder and gave up just four hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. The lone run allowed came on Luke Trainer's two-out, RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, which tied the score.
• Reliever Daniel Ross, who had pitched no more than one inning in any of his previous five appearances, kept the game tied by blanking Bloomsburg in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The Marauders' golden opportunity to win it came in the eighth. Friese led off with a single and swiped second. Kaylor Kulina walked, and after a Snyder fly to center moved both runners into scoring position, Dominic Hardaway was intentionally walked to load the bases. Reliever Zach Newmyer ended the threat by striking out back-to-back Marauders.
• Bloomsburg opened the top of the ninth with a pair of singles before Millesville head coach Jon Shehan made a call to the bullpen. After an intentional walk to load the bases, the go-ahead run was walked in, and that was followed by a two-run single from Casey Cooperman. Millersville then committed errors on back-to-back bunt plays, allowing two more runs to cross.
• Millersville starter Drew Miller gave up just one run while allowing three hits and three walks and striking out a season-high six batters in 4 1/3 innings. Welch bridged an inning for the second game in a row. Ross was tagged with the loss, credited with two runs allowed on three hits in three innings.

COACH JON SHEHAN ON GAME 1
• "We have answered all year. That has been a staple of this team. When our pitchers have had a rough inning we've come back. We need to do the same thing tomorrow."

COACH JON SHEHAN ON GAME 2
• "Stoner is good. He pitched well. We had two opportunities to beat. We had one with the infield in and had a groundout to short. Then with the bases loaded we had two strikeouts. We have to grow offensively from this. When you get opportunities you have to take care of business and step on people."
• "[Ross] was electric. His stuff wasn't tailing off at all. It was as good as I've ever seen him. It was impressive. Even the two balls hit off of him (in the ninth) were not on the barrel at all. I give him a lot of credit. It was a tough-luck loss for him because he really pitched well."
• "We didn't do a very good job (in the ninth) from a bunt play aspect, walked the winning run in. I don't want to sound negative but we are a better team than what we showed in the ninth inning."
• "Both [Nabholz and Miller] did a really good job. Any time you can get us through four or five innings, we feel confident passing the ball to the guys in the pen. I was really pleased with Drew. His stuff continues to tick up and get better every week. His pitch count got a little higher earlier than we wanted and that's what knocked him out, but overall both starts were very good."

NOTES
• Friese has reached base in all 21 games of the season. He needed his eighth-inning single in game two to keep the streak alive.
• Millersville's four errors in game two were the most committed by the team since March 11, 2018 against Le Moyne.
• Millersville is now 38-9 against Bloomsburg under Shehan. Bloomsburg's game two win was its first at Cooper Park since 2014 and just the fourth since the park opened in 2008.

UP NEXT
• Millersville travels to Bloomsburg Sunday to close out the four-game series. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
