McGuire, Walls win but Gannon claims dual meet 41-6

| By:
ERIE, Pa. – The Millersville wrestling team competed in its second dual meet in a 24-hour period but could not overcome Gannon University on Saturday afternoon, 41-6. A pair of Marauder sophomores picked up victories: Ryan McGuire earned a 12-6 decision at 141 pounds and Josh Walls claimed victory with a 5-2 decision at heavyweight. Freshman 157-pounder Brandon Connor was going for his third straight win and was tied with opponent Evan Fisler 3-3 but got caught late in the second period and gave up a fall.

McGuire has won four straight matches and has a team-leading seven victories this season. Walls picked up his sixth win of the 2019-2020 campaign and is tied for the team lead in overall matches wrestled with ten.

The Marauders now return home after their busy two-day trip to Erie, Pennsylvania. On Friday night the Mercyhurst Lakers won a closely-contested dual meet against the Black and Gold, 27-18.

DUAL MEET HIGHLIGHTS
Ryan McGuire began quickly at 141 pounds against Abraham Guariello. He shot towards the left leg but Guariello defended the initial attack. McGuire simply muscled Guariello to the mat for the first takedown of the match. McGuire earned two more takedowns in the first period alone. He scored with a reversal and a takedown in the second period and added the riding time point to win a 12-6 decision.
• At 285 pounds, Josh Walls was tied 2-2 with Gehrig Hutchison heading into the third period. Hutchison chose bottom and Walla rode him the entire period, exposing his back for two near-fall points in the process. The riding time point awarded to Walls made it a 5-2 decision for the sophomore.

POST-MEET REACTION FROM HEAD COACH KERRY REGNER
On today's match: "We can use it as a learning experience. Nothing went the way we wanted it to go, not one result. When you have a young team, trying to find consistency is going to be a hard thing to do."

On the season schedule thusfar: "Without a doubt we just went through the five toughest teams in the conference. We knew that was coming and now we're only looking ahead. We have high goals. Let's not get too bent out of shape when we wrestle tough opponents. It has to be looked at as a privilege to wrestle the best."

On moving forward: "We're not happy or pleased with the results today but we're proud that we get to put on Millersville uniforms and compete for Millersville and we're going to do it to the best of our ability. You can better believe that beginning on Monday morning we're going to get better and look forward to the next result."
