Millersville drops Shippensburg in double overtime, advances to PSAC Semifinals

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey team wasted no time answering back to Shippensburg's 1-0 advantage in the fourth quarter to force double overtime where Kyra Brakefield scored the decision-maker for the Marauders in the 79th minute. The 2-1 win over Shippensburg advances Millersville to the PSAC Semifinals against East Stroudsburg this Friday.

Lexi Robison was crucial in the Marauder victory scoring the tying goal just four minutes after Shippensburg got on the board in the fourth quarter.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• After a scoreless 51 minutes of play, Shippensburg's Rosalina Cappadora put the Raiders on the board. Cappadora finished the rebound from the saved shot by Jazmin Petrantonio to give Shippensburg the advantage with just nine minutes left in regulation.
• Just four minutes later, three-consecutive shots by Erica Tarsi caused chaos in front of the cage moving the Shippensburg goalie, Megan Lay, just out of place giving Asia Weaver the chance to dump the rebound to Lexi Robison. Robison took a close-range shot from the right side of the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
• With a shootout on the horizon, Jordan Goddard stepped up stopping the 3-on-1 attack by the Raiders' offense and moved the ball up the field to Brakefield. Brakefield passed the ball to Tarsi and made a run to the top left of the circle to receive the pass around the Shippensburg defense. Brakefield moved toward the cage pulling the ball right to draw out Lay and dumped it to her left right over the goal line for the golden goal to end the game.
• Autumn Peters and the Marauder defense held strong keeping Shippensburg scoreless through the first 51 minutes and stuffing the Raiders' multiple attempts in overtime. With 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Shippensburg offense forced five corners in just under two minutes. Peters saved three of the four shot attempts while Goddard blocked the fourth.
• The Marauders saw a similar set up in the third quarter stepping up to keep Jazmin Petrantonio from finding the back of the cage. Alexis Gazzio flew out of the cage on the corner blocking the initial shot from Petrantonio at the top of the circle. Petrantonio collected the rebound firing off another shot toward cage this time blocked by Meredith Fagan. Paige Bond collected the rebound hoping to get her shot at a goal, but Peters stepped up to make the save.

COACH SHELLY BEHRENS QUOTES
• On the game-winning goal: "It was a breakdown of play. Kyra Brakefield has some great speed so sometimes she overruns balls. I saw once she received it on her stick and how her approach was to the goal. It was something we've been working on and something she does well, just how she attacked the goal one-on-one and attacked the goal keeper and released it. It was with conviction. I think it was something that we've been working on with all of our forwards and something that Kyra takes to heart and just how hard she wanted to finish. So, well done. I thought Jordan Goddard too and Autumn Peters in the backfield were brilliant tonight."
• On getting a win in overtime: "It's a testament to the kids' perseverance, their belief in each other, belief in our game plan, belief in following through with the little things that we did and we want to do, so credit to them. It has been some tough emotional hits that we've taken, but I'm just proud of how they've turned up. They know they can finish. They say the right things to each other. So, it's just a matter of showing it and proving it to themselves. They proved it to themselves and they earned this tonight."
• On Autumn Peters in goal: "We get to see Autumn do that every day. We have five amazing goal keepers. We get to see them all do that every day because their teammates challenge them. She was definitely in her own place tonight. Balls were coming in high. We know Ship shoots them everywhere and Jazmin Petrantonio is a fantastic player. Just being compared for some point-blank shots. I know she had fun tonight, that's a goalie's game right there. There was some great defense. Credit to Shippensburg, they made us better tonight. They're an incredible rival and an incredible PSAC opponent. It's sad to see someone lose."
• On the Millersville defense: "From the first quarter to the ending of the second overtime, we played a little bit defensively. Millersville field hockey likes to play defense, but we asked them to play more attack and not just sit under the ball. They played a little nervy to start in the first quarter, then to see them work their way out and be more attacking. I think Meredith Fagan was stepping up great. Jordan did a great job for us, she read the field very well. Their forwards and their players pressure everywhere in twos and threes. Jordan kept her wits about her. Defenders do more than defend they really set up plays. Madeline Stehly too, I thought the girls just did a really nice job."

UP NEXT
