Marauders' offense goes cold in loss at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. - Sometimes there are games like this. Millersville, which entered Saturday's PSAC game at Gannon averaging 87.2 points per game, just couldn't get shots to fall inside the Hammermill Center. Millersville shot a season-low 37.9 percent and made a season-low four 3-pointers in the 71-62 loss.

Millersville (3-3, 0-2 PSAC) dropped both games of the Erie back-to-back while Gannon (1-2, 1-1 PSAC) picked up its first win of the season. The Marauders had shot over 45 percenter in each of the first five games and had shot 61.2 percent 24 hours earlier across town at Mercyhurst. Points were even tougher to come by in the second half with leading scorer Jaden Faulkner on the sidelines. Faulkner, who entered the day ranked second in the PSAC in scoring at 23.6 points per game, did not score and played 17 minutes before exiting with an injury.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Marauders led 26-21 with six minutes to play in the first half but missed three shots and had two turnovers in the next five possessions, allowing Gannon to race in front with a 10-0 run. The Marauders never recovered, scoring just 36 points on 14-of-40 shooting over the final 26 minutes of basketball. With nine minutes left in the game, Khari Williams pulled the Marauders to within 50-48 with back-to-back buckets, but Millersville wouldn't score against for more than two-and-a-half minutes and was outscored 21-14 the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Caden Najdawi recorded his second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. He also blocked two shots. Ryan Davis scored 12 points, blocked two shotso and totaled a team-high three steals off the bench. Mekhi Hendricks scored 11 on 5-of-11 shooting. Williams added 10 points.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH CASEY STITZEL
• On the team's offensive struggles: "We missed some shots we usually make. I thought when we got down, guys who are talented players tried to make an eight-point play rather than go possession by possession and get back in it. In the second half we played some of our better defense of the year. That's a building block for us moving forward. We just have to get the offense back to clicking where it was in the first five games. This was the first game where we didn't share the ball as well. We only had eight assists today, and that's the first time this year we have had single-digit assists."
• On improving the team's defense: "We held them to 40 percent from the field and 33 in the second half. What happens to teams sometimes is that we are very talented offensively so we think we can outscore teams. Last year to win we had to get stops and win games in the 60s. We just have to get back to the mentality of rebounding, sharing the ball. There were definitely some good steps in the second half defensively. We got back to forcing turnovers."

NOTES
• Gannon has won back-to-back games over Millersville at home. Millersville has won three of the last five meetings.
• Najdawi has scored in double figures in all four games he has played.

UP NEXT
• Millersville is off until Dec. 3 when it travels to Lincoln.
