Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Bryan Kast, Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant

Record-setting season ends for women's soccer against Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Only one team competing in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament will end the season with a victory and a national championship, and unfortunately it will not be the Millersville Marauders in 2019. The team lost 4-0 to Atlantic Region top seed Bloomsburg in the second round of the tournament, ending what was statistically the best season in the entire existence of Millersville women's soccer. The team earned a program-best 15 victories and finished with a record .738 winning percentage.

Thanks to a first-round bye the Huskies were well-rested and scored three times in the first sixteen minutes of the game. They had not played since Nov. 12.

Millersville, who defeated East Stroudsburg 3-1 on Thursday, Nov. 21 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, out-shot Bloomsburg 9-7 in the second half but could not complete the comeback.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The scoring opened in the 4th minute when Bloomsburg's Maggie McDonald directed an aerial ball to Nicole Varano on the left wing with her head. McDonald sprinted into the central area of the penalty box and Varano delivered the cross. McDonald got her foot on it and it deflected high in the air, soaring out of the reach of Millersville goalkeeper Reagan Kolinski and into the net to make it 1-0.
• The Huskies would add another goal in the 15th minute, when Lauren Hoelke displayed dribbling skill to get past a defender and create space for a shot. She struck it with power and sent it into the back of the net for a two-goal advantage.
• Varano would again deliver an incredible pass in the 16th minute to unlock the Millersville defense. She sent a through ball from just a few steps over midfield toward Megan Callan. Callan ran onto it and booted it home to make the game 3-0.
• One of Millersville's best second half chances came in the 51st minute, when the two Marauders senior players combined for a chance. Amanda McElhare passed to Kay Liebl on the right wing, who then cut it back towards McElhare who was able to get off the shot. It sailed toward the right post but Bloomsburg keeper Jenna Hawkins was there to make the save.
• Hoelke would pick up her second goal of the game and Varano would notch her third assist in the 26th minute, when Hoelke smashed a long-distance shot into the goal to make it 4-0.

POST-GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
• On looking back on the 2019 season: "It was great to set the record for wins this year after tying it a season ago. There are many great things accomplished this season like our 10-0 start to the year. The wins record will be the one that stands out."

• On the value of playing in the NCAA Tournament: "Anytime you can be playing deep into November it is a good sign that can only help. All of our underclassmen and returners must remember this experience and be reminded of how much fun it is to play in. We must also remember all of the effort and energy that goes into getting to this stage."

• On looking forward to next year: "The future for us, I believe, is bright, however, it is very hard to see this season come to an end as we had a great season. It is unfortunate how it ended. In the coming days we will begin our preparations for the future."

• On the two Marauders' seniors: "We want to again extend our thank you's to Kay (Liebl) and Amanda (McElhare) for all they have done over their four years. Getting to know them and seeing them grow has been tremendous and the impact they've had both on and off the field will not be forgotten."
