Big first half powers Millersville to win against Bloomfield

Millersville, Pa. – A first half offensive explosion helped the Millersville University men's soccer take down Bloomfield, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon. Three different Marauders hit the back of the net, including senior Chase Flickinger, who added two goals. The Marauders improve to 2-1 on the season while the Bears drop to 0-2.

COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON QUOTES
• "Very mixed emotions about the game today. We got a good result and at times did some very good things but it wasn't a complete performance. We kept them in the game and made it much harder than it should have been. The game should have been over early in the second half but in the end we had to keep battling for 90 minutes instead of controlling the game and seeing out the last half hour professionally."
• "[The upperclassmen] did well and provided the goals and assists as needed, but we can't always rely on those guys. We need other players stepping up and several had the opportunity today but didn't capitalize. That's an area we need to improve on."
• "Another win and hopefully starting a win streak is always good. We scored some goals and created lots of chances along with some good spells of play. I don't think we got any injuries and there were some good learning opportunities for everyone. All this adds up for positive day overall but still some definite areas to improve."

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Flickinger began his scoring by converting a free kick to put Millersville up 1-0 within the first three minutes. Twenty minutes later, Flickinger did it again by getting a cross from Nickolas Provazzo and firing a shot below the goalkeeper's reach.
• The Marauders kept scoring when junior Jacob Gosselin crossed the ball to senior Jaxson Burns who headed the ball into the left side of the goal. That goal extended the Marauders' lead to 3-0 in the 26th minute.
• Millersville had near-goal attempts in the middle of the first half as well. Spencer Shortt ran past the defense while Provazzo sneaked a pass through. Shortt had a breakaway opportunity but narrowly missed on the right post.
• The Bears responded at the beginning of the second half with a penalty kick goal by Regsan Watkins.
• In the 65th minute, Gosselin stole the ball and scored on a breakaway, putting the game out of reach.
• Watkins of Bloomfield finished his day with a goal that didn't reach the back of the net but slid past the line. Goalkeeper Darian McCauley knocked it out but was too late.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Flickinger led the team in shots with four, two of which found the back of the net. Flickinger recorded his third and fourth goals of the season.
• Gosselin recorded two shots and finished with a goal and an assist. Shortt finished with three shots--his career high.
• Freshman Anthony Calamia had two near-misses. Both shots were saved.
• McCauley finished with three saves.
