Tarsi's two goals not enough as field hockey falls to No. 8 Bloomsburg, 3-2

Millersville, Pa. – The No. 5 Millersville University field hockey team lost a hard-fought 3-2 match against No. 8 Bloomsburg on Tuesday night on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Erica Tarsi scored both of the Marauders' goals, bumping her season total up to a team-leading five.

Millersville falls to 3-2 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 4-1. Although both teams compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), tonight's match does not count towards conference play. The Marauders will have a chance at revenge when they travel to Bloomsburg on Oct. 31 for a match that will count towards the PSAC standings.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Just under five minutes into the game, Ali McKay passed a shot across the middle of the circle to Emily Alker who tipped the ball in to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
• It remained a one-goal game for the rest of the first half, but in the 41st minute Erica Krebs stripped the ball from the Marauders defense at the top of the circle and fired it past Katie Baker to double the Bloomsburg lead to 2-0.
• Millersville got on the board in the 49th minute when Kyra Brakefield sent a penalty corner towards Erica Tarsi at the top right of the circle; she ripped the shot past the Huskies defense for her fourth goal of the season.
• Bloomsburg responded under 10 seconds later with a penalty corner of their own taken by Willow Perkins. Tesa Hoffman took advantage of a deflection from the Marauders goalkeeper and sent the shot into the back of the cage to quickly give her team back its two-point lead.
• Millersville did not go down without a fight, as in the 58th minute Tarsi sent a laser straight from the top of the circle past the Huskies goalkeeper to make it a one-point game again.
• The Marauders were awarded two more penalty corners following Tarsi's second goal, but were unable to capitalize and ultimately fell, 3-2.

HEAD COACH SHELLY BEHRENS QUOTES
• "When we play every game against opponents from the PSAC it feels like Monday Night Football. We were really out of sorts in the first half, but I like how we worked ourselves out of that and came back strong in the second half. We're going to struggled at times, but I love how they made some corrections and fixed their play in the second half. We fell just short of a comeback and it ended up being a one-shot game. Credit to Bloomsburg, they found a way to win. For us, it's a learning game. We have to pick ourselves up and learn from this and figure out how we can be better, and we will."
• "I love that it's only September. No one remembers September when you continue to learn and grow and it's November. The fact that we are generating some attacking opportunities is great, now it's about our ability to finish. We're definitely going to take a look at our corners from tonight and how we finished in the circle."
• "I thought the second half was a phenomenal footrace. We had a great tempo and great speed, which is what I wanted to see more of in the first half. Aliza Mizak, Emma Boutcher and Kyra Brakefield all did well in the second half. Our midfield and goalkeepers struggled a bit tonight, but that's going to happen. I love how they reacted to their struggles and found a way to get better. It's not the result we wanted, but I think there are a lot of positives from tonight and this is a game we can build on. We've done it before, it's just what this team does."
• "Erica really tried to put the team on her shoulders tonight. She plays with her heart and is a heck of a field hockey player. Erica wears her emotions on her sleeve, I love that about her. We always get her best effort, and it showed tonight. I don't think she could have done anything more."
• "I think in terms of, what are we building to become? This season is a marathon. A lot of other teams have expectations and want certain results, and we want certain results, too. But I'm thinking in terms of how we can build our team to be a playoff contender. I think we can, we have some really great ingredients. I believe we're built for distance, and if we have to take some dents along the way to go further we'll do so. Tonight we took a few dents, but all we can do is learn from it and keep getting better."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
Aliza Mizak fired off a match-high six shots, two of which were on goal. All four of Erica Tarsi's shots were on goal as were both of Kyra Brakefield's. Jordan Goddard and Asia Weaver each notched one shot on goal.
Katie Baker made two saves in the cage and Kristy Campana made one after taking over in the 45th minute.
• Hannah Barnard tied a career high with eight saves for the Huskies.

NOTES
• This marks the first time since 2011 that Millersville has lost back-to-back games at home. Those came against Bellarmine and ESU by scores of 4-1 and 2-1, respectively.
• The team's three goals allowed at home is the most it has surrendered at Biemesderfer Stadium since Oct. 16, 2011 when it gave up four to Bellarmine.
• Tonight's result ends a 10-game win streak by the Marauders over Bloomsburg. The Huskies last beat Millersville on Sept. 19, 2012 by a score of 1-0 in an overtime contest. That was the last victory in Bloomsburg's 28-game win streak over the Marauders.
• Millersville out shot the Huskies 19-6 and held a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
• In both of their losses this season, the Marauders out shot their opponent and held a lead in penalty corners.

UP NEXT
• Millersville looks to bounce back when it travels to Mansfield on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 6 p.m. matchup. Similar to tonight's contest, the result will not count towards PSAC play despite the fact that both teams compete in the conference. The Marauders' next home game will be on Saturday, Oct. 6 against IUP at 12 p.m. on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
