Johnstown, Pa. - Two games, two improbable comebacks, two extra-inning wins. For the second time in three days, Millersville erased a deficit in the ninth and won in the 10th. This time, Millersville topped perennial postseason rival Mercyhurst 6-2 to advance to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament.
The 14th postseason meeting in the last eight years between Millersville and Mercyhurst did not disappoint. For the fourth time in that stretch the game went to extras. The win was Millersville's fourth consecutive PSAC Tournament win over the Lakers--three of them being won in Millersville's final at bat.
Millersville's
Eli Nabholz and Mercyhurst's Tyler Garbee engaged in a showdown of All-PSAC pitchers for the first sixth innings, but a two-run home run from Michael Montalbano put the Lakers up, 2-1. The Lakers threatened to blow the game open in the eighth, but Millersville's
Dylan Boisclair struck out the side with the bases loaded to give his team a chance in the ninth.
With the bases loaded and one out,
Cole Friese hit a two-hopper to third baseman Jack Elliott for what appeared to be a game-ending double play. Elliott fired home for one out, but catcher Drew Delsignore's throw to first ricocheted off the sprinting Friese into foul territory.
Eric Callahan tore for home. The throw back to Delsignore beat Callahan, but it was low and skipped through the legs of the Laker catcher. Callahan slid in head first for the game-tying run.
After freshman
Christian Wingard sat down the Lakers in order in the bottom of the ninth,
Ben Snyder led off Millersville's 10th with a double down the left field line.
Jimmy Cain then hit a two-strike pitch over the head of the leaping second baseman into the right center gap. Snyder came home to break the tie.
Brandon White added insurance with a two-out single to center, plating Cain from second.
Ted Williams later singled in a run, and
Kaylor Kulina drew a bases-loaded walk to push Millersville's lead to four.
Wingard gave up a pair of singles in the 10th but struck out two in a row to end the game. The win was the first in Wingard's career.
Millersville improved to 9-5 against Mercyhurst in postseason play.
Nabholz gave up just the two-run home run and five total hits over seven innings, striking out five. Garbee gave up one run on three hits and four walks over seven innings. That lone run was scored in the top of the seventh when Williams squeezed home
Luke Trainer with a bunt.
Williams went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Callahan walked three times and scored twice. Trainer went 1 for 2, drew two walks and scored once. Snyder added two hits and a run.
Millersville now awaits the winner of the Slippery Rock-Bloomsburg elimination game. The semifinal game is set for Saturday, May 12 at 9:30 a.m. A win would push Millersville into the championship game for the fourth time in the last five years.
