Millersville, Pa. - Junior
Eli Nabholz came within one out of his second career no-hitter and tossed a complete game shutout in Millersville's 2-0 win over West Chester in game one of Friday's PSAC East doubleheader. The Marauders rallied to pull within a run of West Chester late in game two, but the Golden Rams held their 4-3 lead, insuring the split.
Nabholz threw his second consecutive complete game shutout, extending his scoreless innings streak to 14. Nabholz retired the first two batters of the seventh, but his no-hit bid ended on Zach Sheranko's single to right. Nabholz struck out seven and walked three.
Ben Snyder and
Dominic Hardaway recorded two hits in both games and combined for four RBIs in the twinbill.
GAME ONE
A rocky start turned into a gem for the right-handed Nabholz. He walked the first two batters of the game, but a 5-4-3 double play and groundout quickly put him back on track. Nabholz retired 11 in a row until a walk in the fifth. Another double play cut down that baserunner. He struck out a pair in the sixth, and with Millersville nursing a 2-0 lead in the seventh, he induced a pop up to first base and struck out Shane Dressler.
Sheranko, however, played the role of spoiler. His single was followed by a single from Drew Jarmuz. A wild pitch then put both runners in scoring position and Millersville's lead in jeopardy. Nabholz battled back, however, and registered a swinging strikeout for the final out.
Millersville produced just enough offense. Snyder went 2 for 2 with a walk and scored both of Millersville's runs. He came home twice on Hardaway singles. The first came with two outs in the fourth. Hardaway came through again in the sixth.
West Chester's Jon Fisher, making his first start since February, gave up just five hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked three.
GAME TWO
One swing from Dressler put West Chester up 3-0 in the third. His three-run blast to right field broke a scoreless tie. Starter Zach Rice kept Millersville in check until the late innings.
The Marauders mustered just three hits--all singles--through five innings. In the sixth, down 3-0, the Marauders got back-to-back, two-out singles from
Jimmy Cain and Hardaway.
Manning Brookens drew a walk to load the bases. Rice kept his 3-0 lead by ending the threat with a strikeout. West Chester tacked on a run in the seventh to increase the lead to 4-0.
Down to their final three outs, the Marauders led off the seventh with a
Bobby Dorta single.
Eric Callahan reached on a fielder's choice.
Ted Williams singled to left.
Cole Friese was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That was it for Rice, who was pulled in favor of Andrew Scarpelli. Snyder ripped a single, bringing in Callahan and Williams. Cain followed with a single up the middle, pulling Millersville to within one with one out.
Scarpelli regrouped, though. He struck out Hardaway, who had singled in each of his previous two at bats. Scarpelli then got pinch hitter
Aaron Taylor to ground out to third to end the game.
The save was Scarpelli's first of the season. Rice improved to 5-1 after scattering seven hits and walking two with three strikeouts in 6 1/3.
Shannon gave up three runs on five hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.
