Shippensburg, Pa. - A tying-breaking RBI double from
Eric Callahan in the fourth inning combined with 2 1/3 shutout innings from the bullpen led Millersville to a 2-1 win at Shippensburg Wednesday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader was postponed because of rain.
The teams combined for a total of six hits. The game's only error--committed by Shippensburg--proved costly. That, along with three walks, gave Millersville its first run in the top of the first inning. Shippensburg also took advantage of a pair of walks in the second. Scout Knotts singled in Cash Gladfelter to tie the score at 1-1. Callahan put Millersville in front for good in the fourth when he drove in
Brandon White with a double to deep center.
Tyler Yankosky (2-0) gave the Marauders 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks.
Christian Wingard retired one batter in the fifth and handed the ball to
Liam Grande. Grande struck out four in two innings and did not give up a hit, but the seventh inning was not without drama.
Grande struck out Knotts, but the third strike scooted past
Ben Snyder, and Knotts reached first base. The following batter drew a one-out walk to put the tying run in scoring position. Grande, however, got leadoff hitter Nick Spangler to pop out to second. Grant Hoover and Grande then engaged in a 12-pitch battle. Hoover fouled off five consecutive full-count pitches before Grande got a called third strike to end the game. The save was the first of Grande's career.
Ben Snyder reached base three times, walking twice and hitting a double.
The make-up date for game two was not yet announced. Millersville will travel to Kutztown on Friday for a doubleheader.
