Softball breaks single-season home run record in wins over Bowie State

Bowie, Md. – The Millersville University softball team broke the program's single-season home run record Monday after hitting 11 in the 17-3 and 16-1 victories over Bowie State. Not even halfway through the season, the Marauders have 27 home runs in the season while the previous record was at 22.

The Marauders broke the single game school record in homers with seven in game one. The seven home runs was the third most in NCAA Division II history, and was one shy of the PSAC record.

Millersville totaled 21 hits in game one and 14 in game two. The last time Millersville had more than 21 hits in a single game was 2010 when it had 22 hits in the 20-1 victory over Lincoln.

Sophomore Rebecca Blatt hit three home runs while going 5 for 8 with six RBIs. Blatt now owns a batting average of .322 and leads the PSAC in RBIs with 26. Freshman Allie Janowiak went 6 for 7, hitting two home runs in the first game. Freshman Faith Willenbrock kept the slugging by going 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.

GAME 1
The Marauders took control of the game with a nine-run, nine-hit top of the second inning and never looked back. Blatt started the scoring with a bomb to center field that put the Marauders up 4-0.  Two at-bats later, junior Maggie Murphy singled to left field and advanced to second base on the left fielder's error. Willenbrock scored on that error. Senior Kaelyn Buskey kept the scoring going with a two-run home run to left center that extended the 7-0 lead. Junior Morgan Almodovar doubled to right field to score two. In the next at-bat, Janowiak hit her first career home run.

In every inning after, the Marauders hit a home run. Senior Megan McCurdy, Murphy and sophomore Mariah Ford got into the action. Finishing 5 for 5 with five runs batted in, Janowiak capped her hitting rampage with another home run in the top of the fifth inning.

Senior pitcher Cassidy Pinchorski claimed the win and did not allow a hit when on the mound. Pinchorski struck out three batters through two innings. After the nine-run inning, sophomore Paige Harris came in for an inning and kept the no-hitter going. Sophomore Emma Bevard came into relief. The no-hitter was not broken up until the fifth.

GAME 2
The Marauders had two five-run innings that included three home runs in the 16-1 win.

Willenbrock and Blatt went back-to-back in the top of the second inning to give Millersville a 7-0 lead. Blatt's was a three-run home run. WIllenbrock's was her team-leading seventh of the season.

In the top of the third inning, senior Kelsey Campbell drove in a run to build the lead to eight. Campbell later scored on a wild pitch. Megan McCurdy scored on a Raeann Buskey sacrifice fly to built Millersville's lead to 10-0.

Murphy doubled to right center to finish the third inning scoring with a 12-0 score. Bowie State's Tiffany Bearns put a run on the Bulldogs side with a home run in the bottom of the third inning.

R. Buskey and Blatt homered to left center field in the top of the fourth inning. R. Buskey recorded her fourth home run of the season while Blatt's was her second home run of the game and fifth of the season.

Blatt led the Marauders by going 4 for 4 and four RBIs. Blatt extended her hitting streak to four games while R. Buskey moved her streak to three games. R. Buskey went 2 for 2 and brought in five runs.

Freshman Catherine Johnson earned her fourth win of the season by going three innings, striking out four batters, walking one. Head coach Jen Probst put in freshman Brianna White in the fourth inning. White did not allow a hit and struck out four batters.
