Millersville, Pa. - Le Moyne completed a three-game series sweep of Millersville Sunday, using late-inning offense for a 9-4 win in game one, and timely home runs from Nick Place and J.T. Pittman in a 6-4, extra-inning win.
It was the first time since 2013 that Millersville lost three home games to the same team. Le Moyne improved to 11-5 while Millersville dropped to 9-7. Millersville had previously won five in a row against Le Moyne.
GAME 1
A
Brandon White bases-loaded double pulled Millersville to within a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Millersville would get no closer. Brian Cox hit a two-run homer in the seventh, and Le Moyne added two more in the ninth for good measure.
The Dolphins totaled 14 hits, drew six walks and reached base four times on Millersville errors. Only five of the nine runs Millersville allowed were earned.
Millersville starter
Cordell Shannon was chased after allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks in three innings.
Daniel Ross provided three solid innings of relief work, giving up just one unearned run and striking out two.
Millersville's best chances to rally came in the fourth and fifth. White singled in a run, and
Luke Trainer pushed a run home with a grounder to first base. Trainer was safe after the first baseman lost the ball on the tag, extending the inning. But Millersville could not capitalize with two on, ending the inning with two fly outs.
Three consecutive walks filled the bases full of Marauders in the fifth, and White ripped a double into left, chasing home two. For the second consecutive inning, though, Millersville stranded a pair. Millersville went down in order in the next three innings.
Le Moyne's Alex Kubera was masterful in relief, tossing 4 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and three total base runners.
GAME 2
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Millersville rallied to tie.
Dominic Hardaway drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a perfectly-executed
Cole Friese sacrifice bunt.
Ted Williams' sacrifice fly plated
Eric Callahan and tied the game.
The tie was short-lived, however. In the top of the eighth, J.T. Pittman led off with a home run. Three more singles gave Le Moyne some extra cushion.
Jimmy Cain drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the eighth to bring the tying run to the plate. Cody Barnes, however, got
Kaylor Kulina to fly out, and second baseman Brian O'Mara made a driving grab on a
Brandon White line drive to end it.
Millersville starter
Tyler Yankosky turned in five strong innings, scattering five hits and striking out five. He made just one mistake, however. In the fifth trailing 1-0, Place cleared the bases by hitting the first pitch he saw over the left center field wall for a 4-1 lead.
Le Moyne starter Ryan Murphy worked into the seventh inning and gave up four runs on nine hits while striking out six in a no decision. Barnes picked up all three outs in the seventh and closed the eighth for the win.
Friese went 2 for 3 with a RBI and run scored. Williams drove in two with two hits, and
Kaylor Kulina went 2 for 3.
