Marauders put scare into ESU but come up short on the road

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Millersville trailed by as many as 20 but clawed its way to within four points with just over four minutes remaining in Saturday's regular season finale at East Stroudsburg. But the Warriors, who have now won seven in a row, clinched their PSAC East title outright by holding off the feisty Marauders down the stretch, 73-66.

East Stroudsburg (21-5, 18-4 PSAC) entered the game with the highest-scoring offense in the PSAC and had scored at least 94 points in each of the previous six games. Millersville (10-18, 8-14 PSAC), however, held the Warriors to their fourth-lowest scoring output of the season on 42.5 percent shooting. Millersville was especially stingy in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 41-32 in the final 20 minutes.

The rally was all about defense for Millersville. The Marauders made just 2 of 15 3-pointers and one of those came in the final seconds. Instead, Millersville turned the tables on the full-court pressing Warriors with a press of its own. It forced ESU to commit a season-high 23 turnovers including 15 in the second half, which led to 18 Millersville points.

ESU still held a 12-point lead with just over seven minutes to play, but freshman Andre Watkins jump-started Millersville's charge back with a jumper and then a transition lay-up off a steal. Classmate Jamal Washington knocked down a shot to cut ESU's advantage to six, and Watkins scored again 25 seconds later to pull Millersville to within 63-59.

But Millersville missed a golden opportunity immediately after Watkins' hoop. An offensive, intentional foul was whistled against ESU's Jakwan Jones, giving Millersville two free throws and possession. Conrad Chambers came up empty in both free throw attempts, and the Marauders committed a five-second violation on the ensuing inbounds play.

East Stroudsburg made the Marauders, who were playing with four freshmen on the floor, pay for the mistake as Josh Williams hit a jumper on ESU's offensive end. Over the next four possessions, Millersville committed three turnovers and missed two more foul shots while giving up a three-point play. The ESU lead extended back to double-digits in less than two minutes.

Marcus Adkison led Millersville with 15 points in 24 minutes but failed to hit a 3-pointer for the first time this season. Watkins scored a career-high 14 on 6 of 10 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman D'Marco Suggs added 11 in a career-high 29 minutes.

East Stroudsburg and Millersville entered the game ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the PSAC in steals. The Warriors totaled 12 and Millersville grabbed eight. The two threes were the fewest of the season for Millersville.

Along with the PSAC East title comes home court advantage throughout the PSAC Tournament and a first round bye for East Stroudsburg. Millersville enters the postseason as the No. 6 seed and travels to Shippensburg Monday for a 7 p.m. tip.
