Men's basketball turns to defense to score convincing road win

Millersville, Pa. - There was no lingering negative effects from the heartbreaking, near-upset of No. 3 Indiana (Pa.) last weekend. Instead, the one-point loss galvanized the Millersville men's basketball team as it responded with its first road win of the season Saturday, blasting Seton Hill, 90-59 behind a season-high 16 steals and a stifling defensive performance against two of the PSAC's top scorers.

Millersville (5-4, 2-1 PSAC) entered the game 0-4 on the road, having allowed opponents to shoot over 52 percent from the field in those games. But the Marauders held Seton Hill to 34 percent shooting from the field and 4 of 15 shooting from three while forcing 21 turnovers.

It was a building week, and that IUP game was a building game," said Millersville head coach Casey Stitzel. "When we came back Tuesday it was as good a practice as I have been a part of since I have been doing this. Guys were engaged, playing hard. They were not satisfied with losing the game by one. They wanted more, and it carried into today. We've struggled on the road, but the problem hasn't been offense on the road, it has been the defense. I thought our guys did a great job defensively."

The Marauders blanketed the PSAC's No. 2 scorer Trevor Blondin, who entered with a scoring average of 23.3 points per game. With James Sullivan drawing the primary assignment, the Marauders held the Seton Hill senior to 2 of 11 shooting and eight points. Nathan Davis, a 20.0-point-per-game scorer, was held to eight points below his average while shooting 2 of 9 from the field.

"We tried to make some other guys beat us," said Stitzel. "We worked to go around screens and make them drive the ball rather than let them get stand-still threes and open jump shots. I thought Jamal Washington did an unbelievable job. He shut them down and got six steals on the day. James started on Blondin, and he did a great job of forcing him to take tough shots. We had the right mindset to start the game and kept those two from going off."

Marcus Adkison, who scored a game-high 24 points, broke a 15-15 tie with a jumper with 11:22 left in the first half, and the Marauders held the lead the rest of the way. Over the final 31 minutes, Millersville out-scored the Griffins 75-44. Washington emphatically ended the first half with a tip-in and subsequent three-point play which gave the Marauders an 11 point lead. Millersville held Seton Hill without a field goal for the first 4:28 of the second half and quickly extended the lead to 17 in that time. Millersville's slimmest lead of the second half was 13 points, and it grew to 31 at the buzzer thanks to a defense that held Seton Hill to just five points over the final 8:33.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Adkison led all scorers with 24 points, making 8 of 19 shots from the field, 2 of 7 from three and 6 of 7 from the line. He also added four steals and three assists. It was 28th time in 64 career games that Adkison topped 20 points. He has scored 24 or more in three consecutive games and has topped 20 points six times in nine games this season.
• Caden Najdawi recorded his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds in just 28 minutes. It was his fifth career double-double.
• Freshman Justin Nwosu scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds, a steal and blocked a shot.
• Sullivan led the Marauders with six assists and also added eight points and three steals.

NOTES
• The 31-point win was Millersville's largest margin of victory in a road game since March 1, 2008 when Millersville won at West Chester, 67-37.
• The win ended a three-game losing streak to Seton Hill, marked the first win since Seton Hill joined the PSAC, and marked Millersville's first-ever win at Seton Hill.
• Washington's six steals were a season high and also matched a career high. It was the third time in his career he has totaled six steals in a game.

QUOTABLE
• "I could tell from the minute the ball went up [Najdawi] had a lot of energy and was really engaged. He was making different-level plays. That was a team that didn't have much size so we wanted to go inside. They started switching ball screens, we'd run a high ball screen and roll Caden into the post where he could use his size and athletic ability. But I just as proud of him on the defensive end. They tried to go at him with he got three fouls and he did a great job of changing shots at the rim and not fouling so he could stay in the game. When Caden plays well we are a really tough team to beat." - Casey Stitzel

UP NEXT
• Millersville has a full week off before playing a PSAC West road back-to-back at Clarion and Pitt-Johnstown on Dec. 18 and 19.
