Mizak and strong defense leads No. 8 field hockey to 2-0 PSAC Quarterfinals win

Millersville, Pa. - Although No. 7 Kutztown out shot No. 8 Millersville 9-4, held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners and spent more time in opposing territory, the Marauder defense held strong to notch its' sixth-straight shutout and Aliza Mizak scored both goals in the Millersville University field hockey team's 2-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinals win. The victory extends the Marauders' win streak to seven games.

Millersville improves to 14-5 and advances to the PSAC Semifinal round for the seventh-straight season, while the Golden Bears fall to 14-5.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Kutztown kept the game in Marauder territory for the first four minutes of action, but Millersville managed to turn the tables and earn two penalty corners in the fifth minute, both taken by Kyra Brakefield. The second penalty corner was sent to Erica Tarsi who passed the ball to Sol Ortiz-Kreiner on the left side of the circle. She dished the ball from behind her back to Aliza Mizak who poked the pass in between the legs of goalkeeper Kerri Hanshaw and into the back of the cage.
• Kyra Wozniak, the leading scorer in the PSAC, looked poised to tie the game in the 21st minute. She fired a shot that made it past goalkeeper Autumn Peters, but Meredith Fagan was there to back her up and record the defensive save.
• The Golden Bears started the second half strong as well, earning two penalty corners in the first two minutes. The Marauders managed to clear the ball and bring it downfield where Brakefield sent a pass to Mizak on the right side of the circle and she slapped the ball off the left post and the deflection ricocheted into the back of the cage. It marked the fourth goal in as many games for Mizak.
• Kutztown had its best scoring opportunity when it earned five penalty corners in just over two minutes, with the first coming in the 51st minute. The Millersville defense allowed only three shots during that span, two of which were saved by Peters. The Golden Bears did not have another shot or penalty corner after that sequence.

COACH SHELLY BEHRENS QUOTES
• "I'm so proud of this team. We've had a ton of adversity this season and we never made any excuses and just kept going. From day one I've said that I love the direction this team is going, and that's still true. This is a really fun group to coach and tonight was so exciting. Our defense held off a very dangerous Kutztown team."
• "This is a very different team than what we were fielding three years ago. This group really had to scratch and claw their way to the semifinals, and they've earned this."
• "You may not always see it in the stats, but Aliza Mizak is the glue that holds this team together. It's the same thing with Jaycie St. John, the stats don't show how much she brings to this team. We're not the same without them."
• "I'm really proud of the way Madeline Stehly, Jordan Goddard, Meredith Fagan and Autumn Peters played in the backfield tonight. We had some lulls, but we responded very well. This team has matured with each game and our team played excellent defense tonight."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
Aliza Mizak led the team with two shots, both finding their way into the back of the cage. Erica Tarsi and Asia Weaver had the other two shots for Millersville.
• Mackenzie Fuhrman's six shots were more than the entire Marauder team had in the game.
Sol Ortiz-Kreiner and Kyra Brakefield each notched one assist in the win.
Autumn Peters made three stops in the cage for her fourth-straight shut out.

NOTES
Aliza Mizak continues her hot streak, as she has now totaled 10 points in the team's last five games. She had eight points on the season prior to that stretch.
• This is the seventh career multi-goal game for Mizak and her second against the Golden Bears, the other instance coming in 2015.
• Kutztown entered the game having allowed only 15 goals all season, the second-fewest in the conference.
• The Golden Bears were playing without Rachel Dusman, who is second on the team and fifth in the PSAC with 13 goals, and did not start regular goalkeeper Katie Dotterweich, whose 0.86 goals against average is the second-lowest in the conference.
• The Marauders have now won 11-straight games against Kutztown, six of them shutouts.
• This marks only the third time this season Millersville trailed its opponent in shots and penalty corners, with the last instance coming against the Golden Bears earlier this season. The difference of eight in penalty corners is the largest the Marauders have trailed in a game this season, with the previous biggest difference being four against West Chester on Oct. 3.
• Although both team's finished the season with 7-3 conference records, the Marauders' 2-1 win over the Golden Bears on Oct. 9 gave them the tiebreaker and the higher seed.
• Millersville is now 3-0 all-time in PSAC Quarterfinals games.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders will travel to No. 1 West Chester for a PSAC Semifinals match on Friday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. Millersville lost to the Golden Rams twice in the regular season, but head coach Shelly Behrens explained that "playoffs is a whole new season."
