Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ryan Small, Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant

Men’s soccer falls in hard-fought battle with No. 3 Charleston

Charleston, W.Va. – The Millersville University men's soccer team challenged and threatened the undefeated season of defending national champion Charleston, but the Marauders' season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 loss to the Golden Eagles.

The Marauders kept the match scoreless until the 40th minute when the Golden Eagles scored the game's lone goal. Millersville finished its outstanding season with an overall record of 10-4-6. That run included the program's fewest loss since 2009, the second PSAC Championship in program history and a fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last decade. Charleston improved to 18-0-2.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The Golden Eagles kept the Marauders to only one shot in the first half, and they broke through on a corner kick by Christos Charalambou that was sent over the defensive line to Javier Gonzalez, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
• Right before halftime, in the 44th minute, junior goalkeeper Darian McCauley stopped another goal from going in with a diving save.
• With time running down, the senior duo of Chase Flickinger and Jaxson Burns both nearly tied the match. Burns got a header pass at the top of the box and a slot to score but was denied by the goalkeeper with a second left in the match.

HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON QUOTES
• "Everyone is extremely proud of the guys today. We put in a great performance and pushed them all the way till the end. It just came down to a set piece moment. The margins are very small at this time of year and unfortunately today we landed just on the wrong side of the line."
• "With each day of preparation, everyone got more confident and ready, which is what we wanted. We put together a good game plan and everyone trusted in it and believed in it. We have wanted this game for a while to see how we match up against one of the best teams in the country. Today, we found out we matched up against them very well and there wasn't a huge difference between the two teams."
• "We defended very well and really limited their chances. We knew we would have to defend for long periods of the game. We wanted to do that defending work in the middle third not on top of our box and we did that. When they broke down our front line, we recovered very well and stopped their forward progression. The whole defensive effort was superb."
• "The future always looks good for the program because of the foundation we have in place. We are losing four fantastic players in Chase (Flickinger), Jaxson (Burns), Kyle (Finsterbush, and Matt (Liotta) that we need to make up for, but we have graduated great players every year. We have a strong returning group and a good freshman class. We know areas that we can get better in and will work on those areas as well as continuing to develop the players we already have. We will celebrate this year for a while and pay tribute to our seniors but then get back to work hungry and ready to come back even stronger in 2019."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Flickinger had the teams' only two shots while Golden Eagle Gabriel Cabral totaled four shots.
• McCauley stopped two shots but gave up the one goal.

NOTES
• The Golden Eagles kept their shutout streak going with five consecutive matches and 17th shutout on the season.
• Charleston out-shot the Marauders 10-4 while both recording three shots on goal.
