Shepherdstown, W.Va. - After Friday's eight-point loss to Shepherd, Millersville men's basketball coach
Casey Stitzel said the Marauders would be better Saturday. They certainly were. The Marauders shot 54 percent from the field and hit 14 of 26 threes, blasting defending Mountain East Conference champs Wheeling Jesuit, 91-71.
Five Marauders scored in double figures and the group was headed by
Marcus Adkison's 24. Adkison hit 6 of 8 from three--the second consecutive game with five or more.
Caden Najdawi added 19 while hitting a career-high 3 of 3 from three.
"We did a great job of making the extra pass," said Millersville head coach
Casey Stitzel. "We played loose. We have multiple guys who can make shots and create. We are tough to guard when we trust our teammates and playing basketball having fun and not worrying about making mistakes."
Millersville's offense clicked early, racing to a 14-4 lead in just over six minutes. The lead only continued to grow.
Amadou Kaba's 3-pointer with 28 seconds left put the Marauders up 51-30 at the break. Millersville made 51.4 percent of its shots and 6 of 12 threes in the first half, but it was only getting warmed up. Millersville drilled 16 of 28 (.571) shots and connected on 8 of 14 threes in the second half. Millersville's lead ballooned to as many as 32 (72-40) with just under 12 minutes left in the game.
Overshadowed by its offensive eruption was Millersville holding Wheeling Jesuit to 36.9 percent shooting and also holding a 41-31 advantage on the boards.
"Defensive was the key to everything," said Stitzel. "For the first 35 minutes we had great communication, did a great job with switches and keeping guys out of the lane. Our intensity was great. We played together on the defensive end."
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Kaba made 5 of 6 shots including 4 of 5 threes for 14 points in 16 minutes. Kaba missed all of 2017-18 with an injury, and his 14 were his most points scored since Feb. 4, 2017. Before Saturday, he had made just one three in his Millersville career.
•
Justin Nwosu scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed a team-high six boards.
•
Jamal Washington scored a career-high 15 points and had two steals.
•
James Sullivan scored just two points but totaled a career-high eight rebounds, a career-high seven assists and two steals.
QUOTABLE
• "I think we have guys who can dribble, pass and shoot. With Caden adding the 3-pointer to his game, D'Marco and Amadou being able to shoot outside, every player we put on the floor can make a three. It is just about taking the right ones and shooting with confidence. We did a great job of that today."
NOTES
• Millersville's 41 rebounds were its most since the 2017-18 season opener, and it's plus-10 rebounding margin was its best since Nov. 18, 2015.
