Burns’ overtime goal secures win over Gannon, No. 2 seed in PSAC Tournament

Erie, Pa. – Senior Jaxson Burns sunk the game-winning goal one minute into overtime to claim the 2-1 victory for Millersville over PSAC foe Gannon on Saturday night. Millersville enters the PSAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and earns a first-round bye into the semifinal round held Friday, Nov. 2.

The Marauders will face the winner of the Gannon/Seton Hill match-up at West Chester. The semifinal games are scheduled for 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.

Millersville finishes the regular season 9-3-5 and 7-2-2 in conference play.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The game-winning play started a minute into the overtime period. Senior Chase Flickinger was awarded a free kick on which he shot through an opening in the defense. It glanced off the goalie and a scramble ensued in front of the goal. Burns came away with the ball and rocketed a shot inside the right post.
• Millersville trailed 1-0 until nine minutes remaining in regulation when junior Ethan Woods sunk the equalizer on an arching shot from outside of the box that went just under the crossbar. Woods received the assist from junior McClain Smith.
• A minute into the second half, the Golden Knight struck first. The scoring play began with Srdjan Dujkovic sending a long pass to the back post. Alex Lee Yaw finished it in the far side of the goal.
• The Marauders and the Golden Knights played a scoreless first half. Millersville out-shot its opponent 5-3 in that half.

HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON QUOTES
• "The game-winning goal started with a good service and great first chance that was saved, but we followed up well with a second shot. It hit the post then there was some confusion but the linesman raised his flag to signal it was in and the celebration started from there."
• "Clinching the No. 2 seed is a great feeling for everyone. It's been a challenging season but it has prepared us well for this type of game and this time of year. It has also really helped our NCAA selection which is just as big. Overall, we are all extremely excited and thrilled to get this result."
• "Brady Hochman did well tonight. He did what he needed to do and never complicated any of the situations. That's what we talked to him about before the game. He made some solid saves and put in a mature performance which we knew he was capable of."
• "The extra time between games is really big. We had a bit of a patched together team today so getting guys back from injury who missed today plus recovering physically from this game is important. It also gives us more time to plan and prepare. Time is a great thing to have at this time of year."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Freshman Brady Hochman recorded his first start of the season in goal. He saved six shots including four after halftime.
• Flickinger had three shots in the scoreless first half. He finished with five shots and three on goal.
• Burns recorded his fifth game-winning goal on the season. Woods posted the first goal of his junior season.

NOTES
• This marks Millersville's highest seeding in the conference tournament since 2015 when the squad went all the way to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Last season, the outcome was different as the Marauders earned the No.3 seed while Gannon captured the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. Millersville has reached the PSAC Championship game in two of the last three years.
• The Marauders went 5-1-1 in October, concluding the regular season with a three-game winning streak.

UP NEXT
• Millersville starts the postseason as the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, earning a first-round bye into semifinal which will be played Friday, Nov. 2 either at 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.
