Men’s soccer explodes for four goals in win over Slippery Rock

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville University men's soccer team received four goals from four players to secure a 4-0 victory over Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon.

The Marauders improved to 6-3-4 overall and 4-2-1 in the PSAC. The Rock slipped to 4-8-2 and 2-4-1 in conference play.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Senior Jaxson Burns got the scoring started early in the first half, working a quality give-in-go play with freshman Nathan Erb in the 26th minute. Burns took the pass back, cut into the box and fired the ball just inside the right post.
• Right before halftime, a throw in by senior Kyle Finsterbush on the left side, the ball bounced through the box and a rushing freshman Jadon Courtney headed the ball into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
• Millersville found a goal four minutes into the second half. Senior Chase Flickinger sent a corner kick to the top of the box toward graduate student Matt Liotta who fired the ball into the left side of the net from 25 yards out.
• Later, Liotta was tripped in the box, and junior Nicholas Leinbach took the penalty kick. His shot was saved but bounced off of goalie's hands and Leinbach followed with a strike into the back of the net.
• Lienbach's tally was the final score of the match, and Millersville finished the match outshooting The Rock 14-5.

HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON QUOTES
• "The attack was effective. We did what we needed to do and that's the most important thing. It was good to see other guys stepping up and contributing though. That was a very positive thing."
• "It's always great for guys (Liotta, Leinbach, and Courtney) to get their first goal for the program. We are all really happy for those guys and they gave some solid contributions today on both sides of the ball."
• "Darian McCauley did well early when called upon and then the rest of the game was quiet for him. The defense was a bit slow to get going but we made an adjustment or two and played much better in the second half to really limit the opponents' scoring opportunities."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Courtney, Liotta and Leinbach scored their first goals of the season while Liotta and Courtney earned their first collegiate goals. Burns scored her fifth goal.
• Burns led the team in the shots category with four.
• Goalkeeper Darian McCauley earned his third shutout of the season, pushing his career total to 31. McCauley stopped two shots.

NOTES
• It was Millersville's third shutout of the season.
• The Marauders kept their series winning streak against Slippery Rock going, pushing it to three straight.
• This game marked the third time this season that Millersville scored four goals. It is the first time that Millersville has scored eight or more goals in a two-game span since 2016 when the squad scored nine.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders travel to Shippensburg on Sunday, Oct. 14 for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. The squad will return back to campus on Wednesday, Oct. 17 for senior day against Bloomsburg.
