Mansfield, Pa. - Freshmen
D'Marco Suggs and
James Sullivan led the Marauders in the first half, and
Marcus Adkison led the team down the stretch for a 70-67 road victory over Mansfield Monday evening. It was the Marauders' first round win of the season.
Adkison totaled a game-high 21 points--his third consecutive game with 20-plus points--while adding seven rebounds and seven assists. Adkison scored 12 of those points in the second half including five in a pivotal 8-0 run that took Millersville from down three to ahead 68-63 with 1:12 left. Millersville led by as many as eight in the second half but lost that lead and fell behind 63-60 with 3:24 to go.
Following a Matt Tamanosky tip-in for Mansfield, Millersville responded. It started with a free throw from
Caden Najdawi, and then Najdawi stole a pass which turned into an Adkison 3-pointer at the other end. Off of a Mansfield miss, Adkison fed Najdawi for a lay-up from the right block. Another defensive stop for the Marauders led to Adkison getting to the line for two free throws and a five-point lead with just 72 seconds to play.
Over the final three minutes, Millersville held Mansfield to five consecutive missed shots and forced two turnovers.
It was a gutsy win for the Marauders, overcoming 30 percent shooting in the second half. Along with Adkison's 12 second-half points,
Conrad Chambers scored eight of his 11 in the final 20 minutes. Suggs, who made 4 of 4 shots from the field, scored all 10 of his points in the first. Sullivan scored all 11 of his points in the first half, making both of his 3-pointer attempts. The duo accounted for more than half of Millersville's 40 first-half points.
Millersville returns to its home court Wednesday to host Bloomsburg. The Marauders play four of their next six at home before closing the season with five of seven on the road.
