Marauders storm past Wilmington, 9-1

Story Links

Millersville, Pennsylvania - Redshirt freshman Bobby Dorta pitched six strong innings for his first career victory, freshman Eric Callahan hit his first career home run and Chas McCormick totaled three hits to help Millersville roll past visiting Wilmington 9-1 in Wednesday's nine-inning contest.

Millersville (27-14) totaled 14 hits including multi-hit performances from McCormick, Dan Neff, Mitch Stoltzfus, Ben Snyder and David Summerfield. Stoltzfus, Jimmy Cain and Callahan all drove in two runs.

Dorta (1-0) shook off a rocky first inning in which Wilmington scored a run on three hits, and tossed five consecutive shutout innings before exiting. Dorta stranded a pair of Wildcats in the second and went on to retire 13 of the next 14 batters he faced. He scattered seven hits and struck out three without allowing a walk.

Millersville also received a pair of shutout innings from freshman Drew Miller. Dylan Boisclair made his 2017 debut in the ninth and struck out one of the two batters he faced. Matt Ulrich got the final out of the game.

The Marauders trailed 1-0 until the third when Stoltzfus' two-out single scored McCormick from second. Callahan broke the tie in the fourth. Summerfield led off the frame with a double to left, and with two outs, Callahan hit a homer of the left field wall.

Millersville sent 12 batters to the plate in a six-run seventh inning that saw McCormick and Cain drive in runs with doubles. Stoltzfus and Summerfield also had RBI singles in the inning.

The Marauders improved to 17-4 against non-conference opponents with the win. Wilmington's record dropped to 25-15 overall.

The first NCAA regional rankings of the season were also released on Wednesday, and Millersville was placed No. 4 in the Atlantic Region. The NCAA regional rankings determine the field for the NCAA Tournament. The final ranking will be issued following the conference tournaments.

Millersville travels to Bloomsburg Friday to begin a four-game PSAC East series. The Marauders and Huskies play at Cooper Park on Saturday.
