Millersville loses big lead, battles back for narrow win over Cheyney

Millersville, Pa. - Once leading by 21 points, the Millersville men's basketball team found itself trailing Cheyney by three with just over six minutes to play. But the Marauders forced a turnover on Cheyney's next three possessions, and a 9-0 run, which included four in a row from Conrad Chambers, pushed the Marauders back in front for good. Millersville held on for an 81-75 PSAC East victory.

Chambers led four Marauders in double figures with 20 points. Marcus Adkison added 18 points, scoring 14 of those in the first 11 minutes of the game. Millersville made 11 of its first 19 shots and forced 12 turnovers in the first 11:30 action, building a 36-15 lead. But an offensive cold snap for the Marauders put Cheyney right back in the game. Millersville finished shooting 38.1 percent while Cheyney, which had not shot scored more than 67 points and had shot higher than 39 percent just once all season, knocked down 47.8 percent of its shots.

From the eight-minute mark of the first half to five minutes into the second, Millersville made just 4 of 21 shots. That stretch included a 15-0 run for Cheyney. Despite shooting 9 for 36 (.250) over a 23-minutes span, Millersville did not relinquish the lead until Cliff St. Juste scored on a layup and then made two foul shots on the next offensive possession. That put the Wolves in front 69-66 with 6:10 to go.

A Mark Perry free throw ended a three-minute drought for the Marauders, and after a pair of missed foul shots by Dikemba Amugo, Caden Najdawi sank a turnaround jumper to even the score at 69. And while the Wolves turned in their best shooting performance of the season, Millersville's trapping defense caused problems. Over the final six minutes, Millersville forced seven turnovers and held Cheyney to one made field goal. A Cheyney turnover directly led to a Perry layup with 4:25 left, which put Millersville on top, and another Marauder steal turned into Chambers' three and a 74-69 Millersville lead. Jamal Washington knocked down a three with 1:54 to play, which gave the Marauders a comfortable 78-72 lead.

Millersville, which entered the game ranked fourth in Division II in turnovers forced, has forced 20 or more turnovers in six consecutive games. The 37 forced Saturday were a season-high and the most by a Millersville opponent on record (since 2002). Millersville finished with 16 steals, five coming from James Sullivan and four from Adkison.

The two teams also combined for 61 fouls and 76 foul shots. Millersville's 36 attempts were a season high.

Millersville has won 11 of the last 13 against Cheyney including seven in a row at home. Nine of the last 11 games have been decided by fewer than 10 points.

The Marauders receive a visit from 10-0 and nationally-ranked West Chester on Wednesday, Jan. 3. Game time is 7:30 p.m..
