Millersville, Pa. -- The Millersville women's soccer team fell to Gannon 3-2 late in the first overtime period Saturday night.
Millersville struck first in the 32nd minute when freshmen
Talia Grynkewicz and
Alexis Glode set up a scoring opportunity in the box. Glode played a ball that deflected to Grynkewicz's feet who turned on the ball and ripped a shot past the keeper. Gannon answered quickly a minute later when Hannah Hays fired an arching shot outside of the box that dipped past sophomore keeper
Kate Phillips' fingers. The teams remained locked at 1-1 as the first half ended.
Gannon took their first lead 11 minutes into the second half after a Millersville foul in the box lead to a converted penalty kick. Gannon's lead lasted only four minutes as senior
Stacie Hallinan took advantage of the chaos in the box after a corner kick and blasted a low shot past the keeper. Millersville locked down and prevented all Gannon scoring opportunities in the final ten minutes of the second half. The Marauders had four shots in the final ten minutes but could not end the game in regulation.
Millersville had the first scoring opportunity in overtime when Glode shot a ball with pace that required the keeper to save it. Gannon went on the attack and forced a corner kick. The corner kick landed at the top of the box where Emily Cekella passed the ball to the right, and Hanna Manczka shot quickly back to the left into the back of the net.
The Millersville offense played aggressively all night and recorded 22 shots. Millersville had opportunities to build a lead, but Gannon's keeper was able to make nine saves. Grynkewicz scored her fifth goal of the season and her third in the last two games. Hallinan recorded her third goal of the season and her 10th in a Millersville uniform.
Before the game, Millersville celebrated senior day and recognized seniors Hallinan and
Rachel Lyon for their achievements and contributions during their Millersville careers.
Millersville finished the 2017 season with a 6-8-2 record and 5-8-2 in conference play. Despite the loss to Gannon, Millersville finished with a 5-3-1 record at home and made their opponent's lives very difficult at Pucillo Field. The Marauder offense greatly improved from the 2016 season. Millersville scored eight more goals while placing 31 more shots on goal. The defense improved as well and held their opponents to three less goals than last season. With a team sporting 26 underclassmen and the team's three leading goal scorers all set to return next season, the women's soccer program will have incredible potential in head coach
Matt Procopio's fourth season at the helm.
