Millersville, Pa. -- No. 21 Millersville fell to Gannon 4-2 in the season finale after an early first half Gannon lead proved insurmountable. Millersville enters the playoffs as the third seed and will host six seed Seton Hill in a quarterfinal match on Oct. 31.
The Marauders fell into an early deficit as Gannon's Eduardo de Bonis scored in the third and ninth minute. Millersville briefly recovered from their shellshock as senior
Marcus Frangakis halved the Gannon lead in the 15th minute. Sophomore
Jacob Gosselin played a through ball up the center of the box to Frangakis who placed a low shot past the keeper. Millersville stayed on the attack and had an opportunity to equalize blown dead by an offsides call in the 23rd minute. A minute later Gannon responded after a chaotic series of passing and attempted clearances in the box allowed de Bonis to finish his hat trick. Millersville had one last attempt in the closing seconds of the first half, but senior
Kody Eberly's header went just high of the crossbar.
Gannon struck again early in the second half when a defensive lapse allowed Mathias Krigbaum to dribble up the center and left sophomore
Darian McCauley on an island in a one-on-one. With a decisive lead, Gannon retracted on defense and heavily limited Millersville's chances. Freshmen
McClain Smith and
Matteo Adiletta connected late in the 86th minute to halve Gannon's lead. Smith passed the ball to the top of the box and Adiletta drove his shot past the keeper.
Millersville finishes the regular season 12-4-1 and 8-3-0 in the PSAC. With the loss to Gannon, Millersville clinched the third seed in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs while Gannon earned the second seed and a first round bye. Millersville is tasked with defeating the six seed in the quarterfinal for another shot at Gannon in the semifinals.
Before the game, Millersville celebrated senior day and recognized Eberly, Frangakis,
Ryan Phelps,
Ahmed Qaisi, and
Jesse Zimmerman's contributions to the men's soccer program.
Millersville is set to host six seed Seton Hill on Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. at Pucillo Field. Millersville won their regular season match up with the Griffins 1-0 back in September after Adiletta scored a late second half goal.
