Millersville, Pa. -- Junior
Chase Flickinger scored two goals in the first half as No. 22 Millersville earned its sixth conference victory against Shippensburg University Sunday.
Millersville started the game aggressively as senior
Marcus Frangakis nearly scored in the opening 20 seconds of the game. The Marauders continued their high pressure play that nearly earned senior
Ahmed Qaisi a header goal off of a corner kick. The pressure paid off at the five minute mark when
Marcus Frangakis fired a shot that was barely blocked by a defender's foot who was standing on the goal line. Junior
Chase Flickinger stepped up in the box and blasted the deflected ball into the back of the net.
Frangakis put pressure on the Shippensburg keeper again with a shot on goal in the 10th minute. Flickinger struck five minutes later to give Millersville a 2-0 lead. Flickinger feigned a shot at the top of the box to juke his defender before readjusting and blasting a shot past the keeper and into the net.
Seniors Quasi,
Jesse Zimmerman and
Ryan Phelps all recorded shots on goal following Flickinger's second goal. Flickinger attempted one more shot on goal before the end of the first half. Millersville finished the first half with 12 shots and nine of them on goal while Shippensburg's only shot of the half was on goal.
Millersville kept the pressure on in the second half and controlled the ball for much of the half. The Marauders continued to shell the goal and attempted seven shots, but keeper Garret Watson was forced to only save one shot. Shippensburg's only shot towards sophomore
Darian McCauley occurred in the 64th minute, but the attempt sailed over the goal.
McCauley earned his fifth clean sheet of the season with the help of his starting back line. Qaisi, junior
Kyle Finsterbush and freshmen
McClain Smith and
Nathan Maynard absorbed the pressure by the Raiders while feeding the ball back into the midfield to continuously restart Millersville's attack.Â
Millersville improves to 10-3-1 and 6-2-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Marauders currently rank third in the conference standings and sit only one point behind second place Gannon University.
The Marauders travel to Bloomsburg on Oct. 18 to take on the Huskies at 7 p.m. Bloomsburg currently is tied for last in the conference with an 0-8-0 PSAC record.
