Millersville, Pennsylvania - For only the second time this season Millersville's opponents totaled more shots on goal, but on Tuesday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium against West Chester it didn't matter. Goalkeeper Sam Rumler played exceptionally, making eight saves including an acrobatic, sprawling save late in the first half and
Margaret Thorwart scored twice leading Millersville to a 3-1 victory over the rival Golden Rams.
It didn't take long for the Marauders to strike against the No. 10 Golden Rams. After a miss-fire from
Olivia Hershey, Thorwart nabbed the rebound and sent it home to put Millersville up 1-0. It wouldn't be the only time that these two helped Millersville to a goal. Mid-way through the first half, Hershey slipped a pass through multiple defenders, hitting Thorwart in stride as the senior tacked on her second goal of the day and third of the year, to put the Ville up 2-1 at the time.
"She hit me with a pass right on my stick," said Thorwart after the win.
Most of the action came in the first half in this game, and Rumler felt the effects first-hand. West Chester managed 14 shots in the first half alone, placing nine of them on goal, including a goal from Kaitlyn Hatch to tie the game at 1-1. Rumler had two saves that stood out--a late-reaction reaching stop, and a diving save. Rumler was able to keep WCU off the board after its lone goal, and the defense stepped up in the second half, permitting only two shots, neither of which were on goal.
"She played well," said coach
Shelly Behrens of Rumler's play. "I have great confidence in her."
The Marauders and Rams battled in the second half, mainly in a struggle over field position. The Rams only had two shots in the entire period; Millersville did not have one until 12:51 remaining in the half. However, once the shots started, Millersville was able to strike again. This time it was
Taylor Parker, redirecting
Erica Tarsi's shot and adding an insurance goal.
Millersville improves to 5-1 and has now beaten two ranked teams in their last two games, but Behrens and the team continues to take it one game at a time.
"Right now we're just looking forward to the next game," said Thorwart. "We take it one game at a time."
That next game for Millersville comes Saturday at home against IUP in their PSAC opener.
