Millersville, Pennsylvania - The Millersville men's soccer team prevailed over Chowan 2-0 in the 2016 season opener Thursday.
Jacob Gosselin and
Ethan Woods each scored a goal in the second half to give the Marauders the win.
Millersville looked to get on the scoreboard first as
Ryan Phelps and
Oliver Calvo both pushed shots just wide of the Hawks net early in the first half. Chowan responded quickly, earning a set piece in the 18th minute that rang off the crossbar and into the hands of Marauder goalkeeper
Darian McCauley. McCauley racked up two more saves as the two teams went into the half scoreless.
Early in the second half Chowan forced McCauley to register another pair of saves to keep the score tied at 0-0. In the 76th minute, freshman
Jacob Gosselin broke through the defense and fired a shot into the back of the net to give Millersville a 1-0 lead.
The Marauders kept the pressure on until
Ethan Woods created some space and scored his first collegiate goal to put Millersville ahead 2-0 in the 85th minute. The Marauders nearly added a third just moments later when
Jaxson Burns placed one on net that was held by Chowan's Carlos Ramirez.
Despite yielding nine corner kicks to Chowan, the Marauders outshot the Hawks 20-9 in their 2-0 victory. Thirteen Marauders tallied at least one shot and six registered a shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper McCauley totaled six saves in his first collegiate start.
The Marauders return to the field Sunday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
