West Lawn, Pa. - Millersville University junior pitcher
Brandon Miller was voted the Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year for a reason. Miller put that award-winning ability on display at Owls Field in Friday's NCAA Atlantic Regional game against Seton Hill. Miller twirled nine brilliant innings and held off a late Seton Hill charge with the help of a
Chas McCormick diving grab in right field. Millersville topped the Griffins 2-1 to advance in the regional's winners' bracket.
Miller (11-1) struck out 11 and allowed just six hits, but a pesky Griffins (40-17) club stayed close until the final out. The top-seeded Marauders (48-5) led 2-0 in the ninth but Garrett Vrbanic led off the inning with a single. With one out, Anthony Fanelli singled, and Chris Miller followed with another single to load the bases. Matt Malacane lifted a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Zac Heide to score from third. With the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first, Mark Colella hit a screaming line drive into the right-center field gap. McCormick tracked the ball and with a head-first dive, snared the ball out of the air to end Seton Hill's threat and the game.
Miller (11-1) dueled with Seton Hill starter Mike Bittel for more than seven innings. Miller opened the game with four no-hit innings. Malacane finally broke up the no-no in the fifth. Millersville got to Bittel in the sixth.
Dan Stoltzfus, who recorded three hits in the game, led off with a double.
Mitch Stoltzfus followed with a single, pushing Dan home. One batter later
Ben Snyder, who also finished with three hits, singled up the middle to plate Mitch.
Bittel (8-3) left after 7 1/3, and the Marauders had several opportunities to add insurance runs but couldn't convert. They left the bases loaded in the sixth, hit into an inning-ending double play with a runner on third in the seventh and stranded the bases loaded again in the eighth.
Millersville has now won four consecutive games over the Griffins, including three in a row in the postseason. The Marauders now await the winner of Mercyhurst and West Chester. That game will be played Saturday at 7 p.m.
