Kutztown, Pa. - The No. 2-ranked Millersville baseball team became the first in Division II to 40 wins after sweeping Kutztown by scores of 4-0 and 9-2 Friday afternoon on the road. Millersville is now 41-4 and is two wins away from tying the program record for regular season victories.
Brandon Miller (9-1) threw his third consecutive complete shutout in the opener, allowing just four hits and no walks while striking out eight. Over his last four starts, Miller has pitched 27 innings, allowing just one run on 16 hits and one walk while striking out 35. He has pitched 20 1/3 innings with a run allowed.
Jeremy Musser led the team at the plate in both games of the twinbill, going 2-for-3 in both games, totaling three doubles, a walk, steal and three RBIs.
Chas McCormick totaled four hits on the day, going 3-for-4 with a RBI, two runs and two steals in game two.
Millersville jumped in front of the home team by a 2-0 score in the first inning of the opener and did so without a hit.
Tyler Orris reached on an error, and
Dan Neff walked. The two pulled off a double steal and Orris scored on a throwing error. McCormick drove in Neff with a ground out.
McCormick led off the fourth with a single, stole second and later stole home for a 3-0 lead.
Ted Williams plated Musser on a sac fly in the seventh. Kutztown's offense put just two in scoring position--one in the third and one in the fifth. All four of Kutztown's hits were singles. Miller has not allowed an extra-base hit in any of his last four starts.
Millersville struck early again in the nightcap, putting four runs on the board. The first three runs to score all reached base without a hit.
Mitch Stoltzfus, Musser and
Ben Snyder followed with RBI hits. McCormick singled in a run and Musser drove in two with a double in the fourth. Snyder and
Tyler Webster plated runs in the sixth.
Starter
Cordell Shannon worked five innings and improved to 7-1 to set a Millersville freshman record for victories. He gave up just three hits and two runs but also walked five a struck out five. Both runs scored came in the third on a double.
Millersville clinched the PSAC East last weekend and closes its PSAC Eastern Division schedule on Saturday at home against Kutztown.
